Front side of the connector

Front side of the connector by rheauchyr.
I am sorry if you do not see the image(s) you might have expected to see.

The reason for this is that Apple, after dealing with this issue, kindly requested me to remove the pictures at least until their engineers had a change to investigate this issue. Since Apple support has been very helpful and already is getting me a new Macbook asap, I'm happy to answer their request.

For those whose immediate reaction is along the lines of 'censorship' and other big words: I don't care.

Update: original images are restored. Apple did never comment on this issue.

Left home@8am, macbook on the power cord.
Came home@8pm, cable was disconnect (probably by our cats) and connector looked like this. The Macbook was loaded approx 33% so was connected for less than an hour in the morning I guess.

I suspect what happened was that it did somehow catch on fire, and your cats instinctively tried to put it out by stamping on it.. thereby disconnecting it from the computer and stopping the source of the heat. Yay magsafe ;)

Past experience has shown Apple to be very helpful when you begin the service call with "My laptop caught on fire".

Good luck :)

Your cats unplugged the magsafe power chord when they noticed your power chord burning up? Do they do this often?

Yes, ASSMAN.

This makes perfect sense. He bought a new $2000 laptop only to burn it to be showcased online for people he's never met. For about an hour.

@gthompson1245- Apple (and other 3rd-party, like Macally) sells replacement powercords for all their laptops. I sold 4 the other day at work (auth. reseller).

@Capirote- I'd agree.

And what kind of cat puts out a fire and intelligently removes a power cord from a laptop?!

Meltsafe update

Apple support responded very well (thanks Klaas) and fast. Before I called our local Apple support line, the dutch engineers were already contacted by their US collegues (who saw the pics) to inquire if I already called in. I'm getting a new Macbook asap and I will return my current one.

They could not tell me anything on the cause and I wonder if I'll ever know. This leaves me with one-month newer macbook, some days of frustration, reinstalling some software and some rare macro shots.

I think you should suspend accepting comments for this subject for the meantime... besides, you're getting a replacement and apple will investigate the unfortunate event. That way,it would be fair to all parties, apple, you and the cat who pissed on the magSAFE connector to put out the fire. Btw, I have a small RC Firetruck... maybe your cat might be interested, I might consider selling it.

I was once, um, indisposed with a ladyfriend and heard a sizzling sound in my room. I looked down at the floor and saw a cat run away. Sure enough, the little bastard had peed on the power adaptor (the ufo-looking one) for my first-gen Powerbook G4. After a lot of cursing and chasing around the cat, I just let the thing dry and it actually worked again. For 4 years. Until the plug that jacked into the Powerbook started shooting sparks and fell off. I'm so glad they don't use that design anymore. But it looks like they may have another winner on their hands with this new design.

Aww, come one...

If there is actually something wrong with the connector, I am sure they will recall them. They just want to know what it is, and they kindly asked someone to remove images that were possibly hurting their business.

Anyways, I have seen them, and so have 1000s of others, plus the blurred versions are still up, its not like this is a coverup, he isnt being forced to say the pictures were faked, or anything like that. Now, if Apple threatened legal action...

Be real people.

You'd also remove the photos if you were in his position. In return for removing the photos, he's getting a replacement computer without much hassle from Apple.

Before throwing insults about selling out, consider what you'd do if you were in his shoes.

The fact is that this issue got publicity, is out there (I'm sure someone saved the photos), and Apple will definitely investigate why this happened (their business depends on it).

If this was a hoax, Apple will put out a release about it. If this is for real, Apple will either issue a recall or won't say a word hoping it is an isolated event.

Q: What's worse than the same old predictable crowd whining about how this guy allegedly sold out?

A: Being a hypocrite who would have done the exact same thing in a second if you had a chance to get a brand spankin new laptop.

The whole point of going public with this was probably to gain leverage to get Apple to replace his Macbook. Actually, instead of being a sell-out I'd say he's damn intelligent and resourceful and got exactly what he wanted. End of story.

Stop your whining you geeky, elitist, drama-seeking, issue-escalating, cranky pants wankers.

dogs chase sticks because to them, it's fun. cats will also do it if and when they find it fun. they just haven't been bred to show an abnormally high interest in that form of play. thus, you could say they have more of a free will in that matter and thus are smarter. they also are more egoistic. it's not utterly inconceivable that a cat would piss on an object that gets more of your attention than the cat itself.

LOL. You've got to be kidding me. That connector obviously had liquid poured in it. There is loads of rust around the metal! I would guess it got damn then shorted. The laptop is all beat up already from the looks of it too. If I was apple I don't think I would touch that with a 10 ft pole.
Hope the pictures spread all over the web elsewhere since apple shouldn't get preferential treatment.
