Copyright is hard

A conversation on twitter on the day the Digital Economy Bill was passed between Adam Liversage (Director of Communications for the BPI, the BPI that supports/wrote some of the DEBill) and Janet Liversage.

Janet: "Great. Bought a card but forgot the envelope - doh."
Adam: "There's some in my study on the shelf."
Janet: "yes but not necessarily ones that will fit the card I have bought"
Adam: "Crop the card using scissors - job done. Or scan the card, shrink it and re-print it."

Where Adam suggest stealing and repurposing a bought card.

Wait, I don't mean stealing I mean making a copy leaving the original intact, and then adjusting the second copy to better suit a purpose.

When you've shrunk it and sent it, the original will still exist. I assume you can just then use the original for something else, sell it on, or perhaps scan it again and again and again that's a money saving tip right there. Shame the copyright owner wont get the benefit of all those copies.

Just saying; copyright, it's a bit complicated.

    Update:

"Is it really not obvious that my comment about cutting or scanning a card was a joke? Let me be clear: I do not condone card-scanning." - Adam Liversage

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------

    [Update 2]

Both Labour and Conservative Parties accused of copyright infringement over their election campaign posters ...

    blogs.telegraph.co.uk/technology/shanerichmond/100004884/...

Basically over the Easter weekend the Labour party published a campaign poster using an image owned by Kudos production company, without asking for a License to use it ... i.e. breaking copyright law. The Conservatives responded by taking the image and altering it once more, again without asking or checking the copyright/license to use the image.

Did they know they were breaking the law or was it an accident? Is it lack of education? When both parties break the law do they apologies "It was an honest mistake?"

And at the same time as infringing copyright, they pass the Digital Economy Bill that "protects copyright holders" riiiight!

    [Update 3]

Our favorite Adam Liversage has a new "Guest Blog" up on the NME site "Five Myths About The Digital Economy Bill" ...

The double speak in #1 is amazing, #2 is retarded and #5 makes it all alright then.

    [Update 4]

And now you can't read the incite to infringe comments anymore ...

    [Update 5]

To continue a theme. The Labour Party rip off a blogger by using their photo, without permission. And thus infringing his copyright. This is the same Labour Party that want to cut off your internet if you errrrr, infringe copyright.

However it was "innocent error which we regret."

    So that's all right then.

Or have I got this wrong, and scanning a card is ok, I'm confused?

    3. ♥ shhexy corin ♥ (38 months ago | reply)

I think you're probably bang on the money.

By the way, it's perfectly OK to scan money, make a copy and use that.

      Nice find. Blogged and retweeted.

Copyright is easy. Sadly, so is stealing.

Drain his family's ink cartridges now. Sure his kids can't print out their homework, but it's the only way we'll stop these people killing graphic design through home printing.

Everyone in his postcode district needs to be barred from any newsagent or card shop for the next 9 months.

You have the names the wrong way around. Look at the image, now look at your transcript.

edit: ok, ok I get it I'm wrong - I just didn't want to delete the comment and make you all look daft :P

    11. tripplehelix (38 months ago | reply)

      That's piracy.

    12. inutriv (38 months ago | reply)

Andy, the transcript is correct. The @name is who the message is directed at. So @JanetLiversage means it's from Adam, to Janet.

    13. Lord Manley (38 months ago | reply)

@rob I was halfway through making that, but I'll not bother now ;(

      Actually, I probably will: www.flickr.com/photos/lord-manley/4502734584/

The names are the right way round. The image is the order twitter displays them, the transcript has them in the correct chronological order to make it easier for people who are not used to twitter to follow.

The "@AdamLiversage" at the start is Janet sending a message to Adam, and the "@JanetLiversage" is Adam replying to Janet.

Don't even get me started on the pink and blue colour schemes ;)

The BPI are actually quite lavish about what they consider fair use of their copyright materials and have said they will not complain if you copy your CD to your MP3player which is also infringment .
What we need is a copyright law that lets us enjoy creative work sensibly.
What we want is for Parliament to legislate not the BPI.
      Its the constitution stupid

    18. GuySwarbrick (38 months ago | reply)

What we need is a copyright law that lets us enjoy creative work sensibly while rewarding the creators of that work sufficiently to enable them to keep producing it.

    19. subcircle (38 months ago | reply)

Proves the point that the laws on copyright infringement aren't all that simple.

    20. Tom T (38 months ago | reply)

Good, but I'm waiting to hear the major parties' positions on card-scanning.

    21. chthonic (38 months ago | reply)

No Adam Liversage it is NOT obvious that it is a joke.

"It was a joke" is the defence of children who've been caught out.

Does he really not understand the seriousness of people's objections to the debill?

When Stephen K Amos says "It's a joke" you know it's a joke because he is a comedian. Liversage is not a comedian. If I said what I thought he was I'd probably be breaking a few TOS so I won't. But be assured that it is not pleasant.

Hardly surprising Liversage has gone private when you consider his previous form with BT. They denied secret and illegal testing of Phorm's tech on their internet user base and were shown to be lying. Liversage was BT's front man in that, and a pretty tawdry performance it was.

I wouldn't trust him to tell me the correct answer to "What does 2 plus 2 equal?"

He is a stooge, a puppet, a mouthpiece and nothing more. For me he is associated with the worst aspects of corporate business.

      It's all on my blog.
