on working with fragile technologies (something from the ick files)

while there is much, much, much I love about the new research and production that I'm doing, this represents one downside. In addition to projectors that quit working or that eat or burn film), moldy footage (something, thankfully, we've not had to deal with much) is yet another additional problem to be solved. Fortunately, someone who donated to me her entire photography collection six months ago (she had gone to digital and had no more use for film-related things. . .lucky for me, but "sigh") included in the package some film cleaner, so I'll start there, hoping to salvage these films. Of the 20 home movies we recently purchased, 14 look incredible (and after all these years and not knowing how the owners stored them, I suppose this is miraculous enough), six of the movies had, to varying degrees, mold issues. The top film here is, by far, in the most compromised condition.
