my favorite building in brooklyn! It's the Montauk Club, a wonderfully absurd mishmosh of architectural styles that just really seem to go together well. It has everything from neo-Gothic windows to Native American faces on the wrought-iron fence. On the inside, it's beautiful- I'll take almost any excuse to go (even a boring college alumni mixer with overpriced wine). If I ever get married, I want to have a party here!

If you look at one of the entrance steps/railings , you will notice signs that newel posts were once there. I took a photo of them in 1982, but I didn't notice till I got the prints back that the cast iron newel posts shaped like lions with wings had obvious marks along their bases where someone had been "working" at them with a screw driver or pry bar- exposing the red lead primer.
Sometime soon afterwards they were STOLEN.
