tom and I by staceyjoy.
Old friend Tom Marsan and I. He's wearing one of the original Marsan Watchcaps. This one I knit for him 12 years ago!

I don't know if anyone else has commented to you about this, but funnily enough I'm right now sitting in a town just outside Paris, in France, looking for a way (an easy way) to use up some knitting wool. I came across your hat, was captivated by the idea of an old flame wearing it for so long -- so much longer than the relationship, so clicked for your photo. And it's lovely. The hat too. Too bad about the relationship - you both look like nice people.

How curious... Thanks, we are nice {mostly! :->} And we've remained friends, which is lovely.

Why this picture has gotten 979 hits {as of now} is a total mystery, though! I really want to know where they're coming from!

From a hat story on a knitting pattern you posted - you told a very nice story, which compels people to click on the photo to see the magic thing.

I too went from pattern to photo. It is a *great* story. I actually started out on your contest entry on Knitting for Men (which I found out about because the winner was amazed that she won). It *is* a great hat pattern.

Thanks!

I ran across your hat pattern some time ago...but never really tried DPNs or circular knitting so I was scared of even taking the risk! It gets cold up here in the fall, and what really made me take the jump into finally knitting beyond a scarf was my Hop-Pop (who enjoys long walks but needs some warm hats for the winter!). He loves that cap so much! I just wanted to say thanks for the pattern. It was a real confidence booster and a lovely gift!

Staceyjoy,

I've made this hat for all of my brothers-in-law, a nephew, my Father-in-law, and my husband. And they all LOVE them. This is a group of guys who don't wear hats. They even steal them back and forth from each other...one B.I.L. ended up with 3 one Christmas, through cunning and wiley thieving. I just printed out the pattern to make them new ones this Christmas. LOVE the pattern.

thank you so much for the kind words, Stef! This is a pretty much a no-nonsense hat, maybe that's why macho guys will wear it when they won't wear anything else. Mr. Marsan is exactly the same way. Hope the recent revisions enable them to fit better.

i discovered the pattern when searching for a hat to make my grandfather. the story was lovely so i clicked through to the picture! I am a little confused by the part in the pattern where the twist happens, but I am going to see if my boyfriend (also a knitter) will lend a helping hand (maybe then I will make him one too). Thank you for posting the pattern! it is great to see that the hat was appreciated for so long.

Dearest Stacey,
I always thought my brother was a damn fool to let you get away. I felt he had met his match when he met you. I often wondered if he thought this too. After all he is still wearing your hat!
I know he would love to hear from you.
Great to see you have your own shop and are doing well.
Cheers, LMJ

I found your link through your "Old Flame Still Wearing Your Hat" story, too. I linked from the Noro Lovers group on Ravelry. Now, even though it's summer here in sunny Southern California, I have an itch to knit your hat! (In Noro stripes, of course!)

Good stories are heartwarming. :)

This will be my very first hat!!! It's for my son the wildland firefighter. Gosh I hope it looks as good as yours. Even HALF as good!!!!

Be prepared to meet men if you knit this hat in public... There are so many men who silently lust for one of these gems.

I knitted this hat for Dad as a radiation therapy cap. He's terminally ill with brain cancer. I lengthened the middle section, so that the tube was 10" before finishing it. Dad likes his watch hats to cover his ears.

I made one for my mother. I used some baby blue yarn left over from another project to make a blanket stitch edging, as well as a tassel. This feminizes a man's hat. I shortened the tube by 1/2 inch, compared to Dad's.

fbrartist, I once resuscitated a green watchcap for Tom that had been left in a van, soaking wet, smushed under some other stuff, filthy. It was gross. I washed it out, and Mr. Marsan probably still has it! These are made for abuse. :-D
