Black Mountain, Kentucky
A foggy afternoon (yes, afternoon...the time of this photo was around 5:00 p.m.) on the summit of Kentucky's highest peak.

This is great: composition, softness of exposure. Wow, you captured it.

I love the way the trees fade in the mist.

Great image. There's a kind of a spooky feeling to it... Or maybe it's just me and the fog. Anyway, love it.

Great atmosphere. You've captured the mist perfectly - this seems like such an isolated location.

Very atmospheric. Expect some vision on horseback to come galloping up any second!

Well done photograph. I know Kentucky is not near Sleep Hollow but I expect Ichabod Crane to ride over the crest of that hill.

Beautiful shot with so much atmosphere. Also perfect for Five O'clock Shadow.

This makes me very homesick. Everything is brown and crispy here. :(

Thanks to everyone for the comments. I'm a little taken aback that this photo has garnered all the attention that it has. This was a "throwaway" test shot. I was there to photograph my kids looking at the flowers on the side of the road. Guess I've learned not to take any shot for granted. :-)
@cindiann: Actually, this makes me homesick too! I'm from Cumberland, and grew up in the shadow of Black Mountain. I like to get up there whenever I go back home. BTW, earlier in the day, I rode my bike from my mom's house and up the mountain. I highly recommend the trip back down for any cyclist!

nice image, caught my eye because i lived in an area we called "Black Mountain" KY as a kid, between Harlan and Everts. What a flashback, as i recall walks like this. thank you!

@Zzzzt!Zzzzt!: I'm from Cumberland myself. Every time I go back to visit my mom, I try to work a trip up to the summit of Black. Glad I could give you a little flashback of home. :-)

Thanks, TRL!!! My dad was a Pennington and his folks died young, but they all came from that area. My mom's side too, but she's a Hale.

One of my favorite places to be... I worked in research on Black Mountain several years ago and am always amazed at the diversity of plant species. Good to run into a fellow Kentuckian on Flickr! Have fun!

Greetings, Janet, and thanks. Yeah, being from Cumberland I've always grown up w/ Black Mountain in my back yard . However, it was when I worked for the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission and spent a LOT of time on Black that I really learned to treasure just what a unique area it really was. The forest type on Black Mountain is unique to its upper elevations, found nowhere else in the world. And being Kentucky's highest summit, the "island" effect makes it home to one of the largest populations of Kentucky rare plants in the state. I absolutely LOVE it there.
Thanks for stopping by.

One of my best Black Mountain memories are of scavenging the wild blueberries. I was working with research on invertebrate communities at the time. It's a small, small world, as we had input from folks at Nature Preserves Commission from time to time... and my paternal family roots are from Harlan Co. Anyway, lovely work capturing our great state!

nice to hear these Black Mountain memories and more Harlan Co roots... still love this image more than a year later.

@Janet: Who did you work for when you were doing your research, and when were you in contact w/ KSNPC? I was with the Commission from around 1996-2000. It's weird to think we may have actually spoken at one time, and then reunited here all these years later. :-)
@Zzzzzt!: Yeah, I'm constantly amazed at how many Harlan Countians I run into all over. We're everywhere, man!

jody9, thank you very much. This is actually not far from where I grew up, and as such this has always been one of my personal favorite shots.

Was out driving around today, over near Ridge Top off Locust Road, KY, beautiful scenery....but I wanted to know what was the highest elevation point for KY, afterwards and so, here I am. The picture is a great shot. It reminded me of the woodland scenes for the movie The Descent...
