Are You Fulfilled?

Are You Fulfilled? by SeenyaRita.
I am. And it's all because of a salad.

This is no joke. This was our bill for the food and drink that Shane, Nathalie and I had the other night at Cafe Gratitude in San Francisco.

"I Am Fulfilled" refers to the live, raw salad that Nat and I ate. Shane had a pizza called the "Open Hearted" which bore little resemblance to any pizza i've ever seen since it was a mound of sprouts and grass clippings . "I Am Surrendering" refers to our brownie-like dessert that I know wasn't a "real" brownie. It was a brown impostor. The I am Loved, Inspired and Blessed were drinks but i can't recall what they were.

Shane forwarded on to me the following review of Cafe Gratitude from a food blog that a friend of his writes at "Becks and Posh" becksposhnosh.blogspot.com/2005/06/cafe-gratitude-harriso...

It sums up the place nicley. As Shane said after reading this, "I am Amused".

"Matthew Engelhart is a millionaire who started training in the being of abundance in 1984. Yes - he is the kind of guy who made his fortune selling workshops. Twenty years down the line Matthew, who apparently keeps his attention on all there is to be grateful for, has opened an organic, vegan, raw, mostly live foods restaurant at 2400 Harrison Street, where his wife, Terces, has the auspicious title of chef 'Genius'.

If you are confused, don't worry so are we. We are Overjoyed to have already survived a dinner at Cafe Gratitude and We are Thankful we escaped unscathed to tell the tale. We are Alive! If we had actually read a little more carefully through the funky website before choosing this place as our G destination, maybe we would have given Gratitude a miss. But that would have also meant missing out on some interesting food and a unique experience. We are Accepting.

The menu is long and unusual. Every item has a hippyish name. If you want an $3, 8oz Watermelon, lemon and mint juice, you can't simply ask for it that easily. You must say I am Wonderful. Well, we secretly like to think of ourselves as wonderful, we can't deny it, but this drink was not nearly as tasty or tangy as I am Effervescent made from Café Gingerale, apples, ginger and naturally sparkling water, also $3. I am Berry Sweet was even more delicious although the blend of Fresh Strawberries with almond milk, dates, and vanilla bean for $6.50 might have made a better dessert than apperitif."

I'd go back just to laugh at the silly names again and I'd also sneak in some meat.

ha! funny you should mention that cause we caught him overcharging us! but it was more from a lack of protein than intentional.

i forgot to mention that tshane helped me to shoot this since i kept overexposing it.

People crave sugar when they don't get enough protein. There's an art to protein combining (rice and beans, corn and legumes, etc)... Vegetarian restaurants that don't know about this are a rip-off - all fluff, sugar, and no substance. Bleh!

I wonder if it's related to the olde "Raw Living Foods" in the Inner Sunset. The owner used to forage Golden Gate Park for salad greens.

Oliver Twist, "Please suh, may I have some moah?"

On the positive side tho, foreign (NE) folk like me would have guessed a much higher bill for 3 in a bay area, post Berkely hippie protest, yuppy joint like that, :)) Hey, a bargain for tourists!

1 OPEN HEARTED SURGERY, 2 lb ground black angus beef patty, 6 slices open range bacon, cheddar, natural ranch dressing, 3 hugs from your goofy friends, somewhat organic ketchup and mustard, E-coli-fairly-unlikey lettuce, toasted mostly-ungenitically-altered wheat bun, side of greasy home styles with tartar sauce..... life is impermanence, find some bliss :)

Rita, I don't know where to start. I can't imagine my life now without having had this experience. Funny how that works! My first meeting with you and Nathalie and look at what we have to show for it. I am Fortunate.

dkleinst Great idea on the tip. I also thought of, I am Broke.

palmea I ordered the Bison Choc Stout as it was the only meat listed on the menu.

Sugar Booger I like the way you drink, errrr, think!

Ha ha - Cafe Gratitude, frightening unsuspecting customers since 2004.

Btw they are a "Chain" now - there is one on 9th & Irving and another in Berkeley. Now, you can give thanks for your food, where ever you are in the Bay Area.

Laurie: I'm sure you have no shortage of these places up around you.

palmea: give me a greek salad, dolma and chicken souvlaki and I'm most satisfied. yeah, the bison choc stout seemed totally out of place.

whileseated: are you serious??? ewwwww.

capt caveman: i feel healthier for having eaten it. yeah, it could have been twice that much. we got off easy.

madmax: ha! i was thinking you should have been the one to parody this!

sugar: anytime, girl! bring it on.

pete: yes, i know. we've had lunch together before. remember? :)

keaux: i love it. this is what makes sf so darned fun. but yes, it's weird. and once you're away from it it's like a woody allen version of cali.

idaho: yes, of you eat at cafe gratitude you live longer.

shane: yes, it's true. and thanks to Nathalie for suggesting it.

cheeky: It would have made more sense if it was called: "I am a chocoholic"

monkey: farthest thing from a deli i've ever been to!

ice nine: very good question! it wouldn't be so amusing then.

belin: yes, they had wine too. and it a very nice live vintage.

Trois Tetes: ha! funny. it's true. i said the same thing when we were in there. but this could exist in seattle and portland as well.

cate: we attempted the card game. did you play it? for long? we had more interesting things to talk about!

cbonney: it was actually quite good. in a vegan way.

Dr. Mike: it qualifies as kosher i'm sure.

Geyser Gary: Bison Choc Stout is a beer. It was alright. Shane might be able to give you a better analysis.

place: I'd love to see that. It can serve surf and turf!

sixy: the whole review is pretty hilarious.

Instant favorite.

This is such an overpriced new age treehugger place (sorry if I offended its ardent fans here) and your shot captures it perfectly. What amazes me is that even with such exorbitant prices (and it mostly serves grass), the place actually has a local following; I would have thought it would be more of tourist attraction.

Eating in Cafe Gratitude is like watching James Bond. There is so much silliness that to enjoy the moment, you have to suspend disbelief.
