Happy New Year Everyone!
Once upon a time all of the streets downtown San Francisco looked like this on New Year's Eve day. The tradition was for office workers to throw their desk calendars out their windows. It's totally unPC now and impossible when the windows don't open. But i really miss it. It was the closest we ever came to snow!
I decided to research traditions elsewhere and came up with a few fun ones:
l. In Sao Paulo and La Paz residents wear brightly colored underpants. Red for an amorous year ahead and yellow for lots of money. Hmmm. Hard choice. But since i don't have any yellow ones i'd have to opt for red.
2. Need to confirm with Waleska if this is true... In Madrid and Barcelona you quickly eat 12 grapes—one at each stroke of the clock. Each grape is good luck for each month of the coming year.
3. In Manila the wearing of polka dots is highly encouraged on New Year's eve. It's believed to attract money in the future. Most households try to serve circular fruit symbolizing the round shape of coins and prosperity.
4. In Puerto Rico people clean their homes and decorate the outside with streamers, balloons and lights for New Year's. At midnight children throw pails of water out the window to rid their homes of evil spirits.
5. In Denmark locals throw old dishes at the doors of friend’s homes for good luck. Finding a big pile of broken dishes on the morning of January 1 means you have lots of friends.
