meaningless selfportrait

"The only valid censorship of ideas is the right of people not to listen." - Tommy Smothers
life has a way of repaying those who steal from others .keep taking awesome photos Reb.
Keep that Chin up !
JP
I leave my computer for a few days and come back and find this whole poorly managed mess... wow.
Funny how after this whole fiasco happened, I find the story on BBC news, and all of a sudden the same day, there is a survey that loosely relates to the topic here on Flickr's Homepage when I log on......
freckles!!
meaningless selfportrait by _rebekka.
just lil'ol me, keeping my mouth shut.. seen and not heard, thats what pretty girls are for..

however, thomas hawk has some really interesting stuff to say ...

my blog has reading material on it as well

EDIT: since posting this, i have received an apology from Flickr HQ, for removing my previous post, which had 450 comments (long , meaningful comments, about how selling other peoples stuff for profit is a crime, and advice and suggestions on how to deal with it) and had over 101,000 views at the time of its deletion.

im relieved that they owned up to their hasty action of removing the photo. thats something.

EDIT again: update on my blog

To try and be balanced I can partly see that abusive emails to the other company and posts suggesting going round and doing something to them could cause Flickr some problems - but surely those particular posts could be dealt with?

It is a real shame Flickr hasn’t taken a balanced view and alongside dealing with abusive posts , offered their support for the original issue …

i think it has more to do with flickr (or more directly, yahoo) being frightened that flickr users will get the message that their images can be stolen from flickr and reused with absolutely no backup from flickrs legal team at all.

Dave Ward Photography  Pro User  says:

Clearly if some P.O.S. "gallery" steals your photographs and makes thousands by selling prints of them, you are supposed to just smile, say "How flattering that they like my work!" and then just shut up and take it.

This reminds me of a disgusting quote from Clayton Williams, who said about rain, "It's a lot like rape. As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it." It's like people are supposed to just accept it and shut up. Sickening and infuriating.

I can hardly comprehend that flickr staff would lash out against the VICTM of this.

I mean, basically what happened was a digital art heist: this little fake "gallery" broke in, stole Rebekka's art -- that's called thieft -- and then they turned around and sold the stolen goods -- and that's called fencing.

They are in the business of selling stolen goods.

I guess flickr is more worried about keeping uppity wimminfolk in their place than they are about thieft, fencing, or laws.

Get back in the kitchen and bake flickr staff some cookies, Rebekka! :-p

Strangely, I find flickr's actions even more outrageous. Obviously, I disapprove of Only Dreemin's actions. What they did is undeniably wrong. But where there is money there are greedy assholes. They behaved the way they did to make a profit. Gross but still something we can wrap our heads around even if we would never do such a thing ourselves. What I cannot even remotely comprehend is why flickr would censor you when you did nothing but acknowledge what happened. Is this a liability issue or something? I don't get it. Now, you've been wronged twice. But, still, perhaps something good will come of this. Sometimes fighting censorship is the best way to draw attention to freedom. A lot of people are on your side.

It doesn't have to be only for that, let's make it more positive: for anything that would bring you some joy, or something.

Just like you did for others here.

I can't do it for you, people wouldn't trust me, that's why I urge you to do it...for us, because I believe we would also benefit from it, photographically wise [if that even exists in English].

@Yutai: if they did, they would be completely out of line. they at least could cite some rule about "not harrassing others" when they deleted the other post (i mentioned that people send angry letters at the bottom of the caption, and the letter senders apparently got carried away , sending death threats and such)
if anyone tries to tell me im doing anything remotely like that with this photo , and that caption, i'd be surprised, but stil, im almost expecting a brutal reaction tho this modest protest of mine.

@Daveward: "uppitty wiminfolk" .. that made me burst out laughing;)

@|kono: i seem fragile?? the photo must be misleading then.. im many things, but i don't think fragile is one of them. Fragile is how i think of the stupid female leads in masculine action movies, you know, the ones that scream a lot, flailing their hands, waiting for the man to come rescue them (just watched spiderman3 this weekend with my boys, kirsten dunsts character fits that bill perfectly.. i felt nauseous watching her cowardly behaviour)

that aint me.

Also, I think there are two seperate issues to deal with here. The first being the theft of someone's work which is absolutely a crime.

The second is stifling the voice of the victim of that crime. I have less of a problem with some of the community guidelines when I see innumerable ‘penis pix’ - but the stuff that truly is art is easy to distinguish from the smut and the people running the show should be able to differentiate between the two.

This is a most unfortunate set of circumstances. Unfortunately, I have no real advice to give as I am not too familiar with what legal options you have at this point. So you got an apology, will the photo and comments be reposted?

I am happy that Heather Champ has written you an apology. I'd like to see a public statement, about this, on behalf of flickr, share with all of us. This is a community, after all, and an apology to you is one step in the right direction of a more broad reparation process.

Does the apology mean that they will put it back? Because if they aren't then wouldn't that be just an "oh ooops sorry" kind of attitude to it?

I suggest you guys send a note to the owners of Flickr:

Heres mine:

digg.com/tech_news/Flickr_censorship_2

Shame on you guys for not supporting your arists....

ESPECIALLY Rebekka....she is one of the reasons I signed up and paid for a full account. Her art inspired a lot f us to do so....she is one of your stars here. I cant beleive this is how you treat those people who BRING YOU CUSTOMERS!

If you dont replace her photo and allow her FREE words -- I will delete my account and move on to another photo service...and every person I ever told to use Flickr? I will also tell them.

Btw - I own a web 2.0 company myself - and Im about to go public beta with a user embeddable product --- you may be surprised how many people I will be able to reach about this.

Shame on you for NOT protecting the creative rights of your artists....it shows your true colors about this....you dont care about the artists.

angry regards,

Tj
