The 165 Piece Puzzle

The 165 Piece Puzzle

This is a small test stitch of a large 165 image Gigapan of the Inner Sanctum located in Tumbling Rock Cave. Each of the 165 images was captured in raw at 15MP each.
To light the shot a custom 20,000 lumen SIT stack was used. This allowed us to use lower ISO's and shutter speeds. An ISO of 400 f/5.6 with a shutter of 3 seconds.
When we fired up the lights the chamber really lit up. This type of shooting is only possible as a team effort. Our team for this shoot included: Brent Wilkins, Jeff Schreier, Sabrina Simon and myself.
The whole experience was a very valuable lesson and we learned a lot. This will open the doors for more ambitious projects in the future using both the new heavy class SIT stack lighting system as well as Gigapan technology.

Sabrina in the Blue Crawl

Sabrina in the Blue Crawl

Sabrina negotiates the 150 foot section of tight passage as she makes her way between the two large chambers it connects. The Blue Crawl got its name during an exploration trip many years ago to widen it using a torch and cold water. The torch was used to heat the rock and then cold water was dumped to quickly cool and fracture certain parts allowing them to become passable by caver. The story is that a caver crawled over some rock while it was very hot and thus cursed a blue streak that turned the walls blue.
At one time this was the only route to the back of the cave and all traffic routed though this 8-9 inch wide passage. Few cavers travel this way now. We wanted to share a glimpse of what it is like in the Blue Crawl of Tumbling Rock.
