Christmas LEGO Table
This is the table I built for my kids' LEGO collection for Christmas 2009.
The base is made from four slotted organizers from IKEA. The bins (also from IKEA) are made to slide into all the nice slots.
The table top is made from a 5' x 5' piece of baltic birch plywood cut to 4' 8". I rounded the corners of the top, routed 1/8" edge, and sanded it using an orbital sander. I then used spray paint (first coat is white primer, then royal blue -- which matched the blue LEGO color exactly, and then a clear coat) bought from Home Depot.
The kids love it and so do I since their LEGO stuff is now much more organized and stays in one area of the house (though it looks kinda messy in this pictures because of being in the middle of a few new projects).

I am building one as well...two questions, what did you use to round the edges and what style bit did you use in the router?
rb3wreath (18 months ago | reply)
@ride4lamar - I believe I used a hand jig saw to round the corners. The router bit I think I just used a 1/8" or 1/4" round bit. There are probably a few different ways to do the same thing, but that's what I'd do if I were to do it again.

This table is great! I would like to build one for our kids, but when I look at Ikea's website, I can't seem to find the slotted organizer and the bins that you used. Would it be possible for you to post links to the items? Thanks so much for posting this!

Great idea. Other play tables are too small. I love this size. One problem I am having, WHERE did you get the 5' x 5' birch plywood? I am having trouble finding it. Also did you attach the top to the storage bins and are the bins attached to each other. Thank you in advance, Chris

I did use wood screws to strategically attach all the storage bins together first and tried to keep the whole thing as square as possible. Then, from underneath, I used wood screws to attach the top (make sure you don't use too long of screws). It makes for a nice sturdy platform for all the LEGO blocks.
Best of luck!

I only found one shop with the 5x5,I ended up using two pieces of 5/8 plywood on mine...connected them with two squares of the same wood below that were the size of the center of the four ikea shelves..used wood filler up the middle and sanded it...cant see the seam and about 3/4 the price of baltic birch.

We loved your design and built a similar table for our boys. here is my blog post about it...we credited you with inspiring us with the idea and have a link to your flickr photo and info.

you will see the Lego table my hubby made at the bottom of the post. We did ours with two of the slotted organizers instead of four. He made wooden legs for the back of the table so that the boys can use it not only for Legos but also for school work, as we homeschool the boys.
Thanks for the inspiration!

Good work! The grandkids will love it, they are lucky to have such a creative dad! Looks like a lot of others are benefiting from your interest in having a well-organized Lego development site (Ron's words).

This is the best table I have seen so far. We live in Sweden, so I will be going to the IKEA shop tomorrow and attempting to copy you :-) Thanks for posting the idea and the details on building!

Absolutely brilliant table...well done on creating this. Am now trying to work out if I can justify building one for my nephew as we have an extensive lego collection at my house that he plays with that seems to be growing each week! Was trying to find something large enough to put the cargo train on whilst leaving him room to play and build on there. He is only 3 so will have many more years of playing so think it would be worth it. Might have to buy a bigger house though lol. thanks for sharing.

What beautiful tables everyone! Now I want one - I already have one of the Trofast storage systems. Looks like a trip to ikea again!
