The featured shot was captured near work. The lighting was not favourable. However, the wind really helped getting this Merlin to settle down and perch on this tree branch for a few minutes. The shot is a bit high-key, but at the same time the yellowish-brownish colour of the Merlin really stands out. Best to view it in black!
As for the shot below, I encountered this Merlin at a playground near my house as I was heading to work in the morning. It was quite a show as the Merlin was chasing several Magpies, then Magpies chased it, then the Merlin chased the Pigeons, then back to chasing/divebombing the Magpies. It was a really good opportunity for some close flight captures, but the lighting was so crappy that it was very hard to freeze the Merlin's flight speed and hunting action.
