The X's are the X clamps that hold the CPU and GPU.. the main reason the "Red Ring of Death" actually happens. They were meant to apply equal pressure on all parts of the chip, but often squeeze too tightly. When my Xbox RRoD'd I removed these and used normal screws and it work afterwords.

I think you'll find the majority of ATi GPU mounts are x-clamps, and this is not the main reason for 360 failures.

It is also just the design of mounts for the heatsink.

It doesn't look right because its the new, smaller architecture CPU heatsink. The newer heatsink doesnt have the heatpipe that the old original did.
