first impressions

I am tall. Well, you look tall anyway.
;)
Sure! ;-))
what does this one say?
"i am a dreamer"
thanks, I was reading it as "I am a beamer" wasn't sure if that meant you were remarkably smiley or I was reading it wrong...
Cute..Love your nose..Yeeeah!
Very capable
icy?
hmm...
Wasn't sure if it was dreamer or learner. I figured either would be suitable and fine qualities.
first impressions by raspberrytart.
I was talking with a friend the other day about first impressions--about how completely wrong that they can be. It got me thinking about how much easier life would be if you could see a person's personality and all things good and bad in the first glance. But then again, that would take the mystery out of people, wouldn't it?

I spent 45 minutes writing on my arms and shoulders, only to pick the photo that doesn't show as many words.

PS...I took this photo with my new dSLR. I've finally moved up in the world! Except that I feel like I've been busted back to amateur class.

Great way to show how you feel. You might get a bit cold walking round like that though.

You're Lazy but you put so much effort into this photo?
You're Shy but you share a photo that shows a lot of you emotions off?
Words can never truly replace the emotion a face and body can show.

Even if you do give off a spot on impression of who you are and how you feel, people still choose how to treat you based on who they are and what situation it is.

Very interesting... echoes of the film Memento.

I think there are lots of thought-provoking issues about identity here. In what sense is the first impression here more 'real' than any other? One can choose ones identity to a certain extent by how one dresses, speaks, moves etc., in the same way that a certain choice of words presents a particular image of yourself. Of course we have no control over how others choose to process that information; interestingly, people are already questioning your own self-assessment via these comments.

I also wondered how such an image might change over time as one's sense of self evolves, through an accumulation of events and experiences.

One possible development of this project that occurred to me would be for other people to describe you - both very good friends with a deep insight into your character, and strangers who have only first impressions to go on - and to inscribe one of those sets words on you, so there are two (possibly clashing) identities in the same image. I'd be intrigued to see how they compare. I wondered whether it might also be interesting for you in that "the last thing we find out is how other people see us".

Wow, cool concept for a photo. I bet it was pretty hard to write all that stuff on yourself.

Don't worry, the Nikon D50 is fairly easy to learn how to use.

Martin Homer hit it with his comment. The film Memento tells how a man with no short term memory writes notes on his body to remind himself who and what he is. Something tells me you are many things more than what you've written. Strange that you picked the shot with fewest words.

To everyone who asked about the new camera: Nikon d50.

To everyone who mentioned Memento: I never saw this movie, but your comments have really intrigued me. I guess I will have to get a copy of this and check it out!

@Austin: Next year!

@cuibel: Yeah, I left a layer of skin behind in the shower. ;)

@fitzebwoy: It doesn't really show a lot of emotion. They're just words. You're the one putting meaning and emotion into them. And yes, I'm certainly lazy, because I've had this concept for over a week and hadn't executed it 'cause I knew it would take a lot of time. Maybe I should have put "procrastinator" instead of "lazy"?

@Martin Homer: Your comment got the wheels in my head turning. A friend once described me to another person and sent me the e-mail that she had sent. I looked that over today and saw that there were very few things that she had said that had ended up on my body in this picture, even though her perception is every bit as true. Maybe I'll have to do some kind of shot with words from other people just for contrast.

@see.wolf: Yes!

To everyone else: Thank you so much for your comments!

very interesting and interesting too that so many people comment on this photograph. I suppose that if we feel to compelled to look at a photograph then it works. This is not a great photograph (by the normal standards) but then, that's not really the point. It's more about expressing an emotion.
Posted 41 months ago. ( permalink )

@gibsonstreet - surely that would depend on one's definition of "great" and "normal standards"?
