Reliability? I wanted to refuel my car at the gas station. When I wanted to use my card to pay, I was greeted by this nice error message: "The exception unknown software exception (0x0eedfade) occurred in the application at location 0x77e73887."

So, you've asked for an example of a JPEG that is better done by PS rather than GIMP, well, here it is. It's a little bit javascripted page comparing two images saved at different quality levels in both GIMP and Photoshop. Notice that following your mapping, GIMP's pics are a bit of bigger size.
Anyway, the overall difference in size or quality isn't that significant, which means you were right :).
