Angel Oak

Crop?
Knot I like.
Angel Oak by Zevotron.
Reportedly the oldest thing -- living or man-made -- east of the Rockies, Angel Oak is a live oak tree aged approximately 1,500 years. Some locals simply call it The Tree. It stands in a wooded area along Bohicket Road of John's Island outside Charleston, South Carolina.

Wow, as a South Carolinian, seems like I ought to have known that. I'll have to try to find it next time I'm down in Charleston...

Wow--love all the sinewy turns of the branches. That is a massive tree... I think your photo really emphasizes it by having the trunk occupy all of the left side--really effective!

Great composition and the b&w really works out well!

It is a truly massive tree, I didn't have a lens wide enough to take the whole thing in. I do have a wide shot showing the trunk and most of the branches off to each side, I've got to remove the tourists before I post it though.

Turbojoe - yeah do try to find it when you're next in Charleston, not far from Kiawah and Seabrook, on John's Island, if you're ever down on that part of the city. The entryway can be a little hard to find though.

Heath: thanks, I think the trunk might be a little too dark, I was playing around with it last night in Lightroom, and couldn't get it quite where I wanted it. It was hard to balance getting it too dark to achieve a psuedo-silhouette with the trunk and branches and still show some detail on the trunk and branches.

I love the mood of the shot..at first I thought the main tree truck was too dark, so I was looking in the dark for details, then being drawn over left to see other details so I was ging to suggest making it lighter... but.... , I think (only my amatuer 2cents worth) make the main tree trunk a silhouette and move the framing right so as to cut it in half basically leading your eye quickly from the silhouette to the shadows and forms in the right of the shot. Unless of course the main emphasis is on the tree trunk.. Hope this is the sort of comment you were after :)

I'm not a Pro, so this is jmo. I would like to see more detail in the trunk .... with the way its framed....If it was framed with less of the trunk....definitly keep the trunk as a silhouette.

CORDAN: Thanks!

karowich: Thanks, I hadn't thought about cropping it and having the trunk in silhouette, I was thinking in the other direction, trying to get more detail out. I will try your suggestion though and see how it looks.

delladawn1: Thanks, I was thinking the same thing, that there should be more detail in there. I might crop it as Karowich suggested and silhouette the trunk and include less of it in the shot. BTW, don't worry about not being a Pro, I'm not either :)

Okay - I'll give my wooden nickle worth - the tree shot is excellent -from about 1/4 of the tree all the way to the right side of the frame. The branches and light peaking through the leaves are the grandest parts of the shot for me. I find my eye going right there - BUT - then my eye goes back to about mid line or 3/4 line of the tree's trunk (speaking vertically here) - trying to find some definition in the darkness. It seems to take away from the beauty of everything to the right of the tree.

All that said, perhaps in your post work you can find away to work on the texture of the tree's trunk - I think it would really pop that whole picture and bring it in tune with all that you captured so well on the right side of that frame.

Hope that helps.

This is a great shot. I have something similar and it in no way does it justice to the massiveness of the tree in person. This may be a personal bias, but I am not that keen on the B&W because everything blends in too much.

I would love to see what it looks like with that antique effect or faded ... basically almost black and white but with light undertones of colors so you can see a bit of the green in the leaves and serve as a little contrast to the tree trunk. I think that may make the trunk pop more, but its hard to say without seeing it.

So those are my amateur 2 cents, but overall it is a fantastic shot. Well done!

Kitzzy: It's interesting, when I was first running this through post, I had a copy of it that was almost B&W but with just a hint of green in the leaves, it did look kind of cool. I'll see if I can get back to there again and see what it looks like. Thanks for the suggestion.

For those keeping score at home, this is my second picture to make it into Explore 500! Woot! :)

Definately has possibilities.
As it stands, to much solid black in it for me. I have suggested a crop and maybe just have a little detail on the trunk.

dicktay2000: I like the idea of the crop and will give it a shot, I'd like to move it just slightly over to the left to get that knot in, I kinda like it. :)

I don't agree with the crop suggestion, I like it the way it is. It shows the magnitude of the tree very well...and I like the nice contrast here. That's what drew me to the photo. Nice job!

Since the tree is your subject, I would like to see more detail in the trunk, perhaps at the expense of blowing out some of the extraneous foliage.

I know this is an old thread, but I used to play on and around The Tree when I was a kid. As a young man, I could drive my car safely around the trunk under the huge limbs, but I would still have to be careful not to turn too sharply and get too close to the trunk. We could just walk right up into The Tree on the big branches. We all took good care of The Tree, and not many non-locals knew about it. Now there are multiunit developments right up against her.
After my Grandfather died in 1969, my Grandmother moved from the Isle of Palms and built on Johns Island. The tree is not far from her place. Too bad that now my Aunt, who has gone to an assisted living facility, is selling the home. It's nice and right on the creek. I used to catch a bushel of crabs in no time flat from the pier. We went striking for flounder, shrimping, raking oysters, you name it. If it was fun, we had it. Too bad I can't buy it. It's too far away, and I can't afford it.
