This is probably my first attempt at shooting birds. This was taken a few hours ago i.e. today, Sunday, June 21, 2009. I went for a shoot with my friend Sanjeev to some farms on the outskirts of Amritsar city, when I got a chance to try my hands on ‘Birding.’ :D
We were not there to shoot birds but somehow I couldn’t let this chance go by.

This shot was taken during a live performance by famous Punjabi singer, Lakhwinder Wadali.

Lakhwinder’s grandfather Thakur Dass Wadali was a famous vocalist of his time whose two sons, Puran Chand Wadali and Pyarelal Wadali, formed India’s most celebrated Sufi Qawali duo, the Wadali brothers. Today he has decided to carry forward their musical legacy. Lakhwinder Wadali, son of Ustad Puran Chand Wadali is today known for his singing which is stated to have a fine blend of classical and contemporary music.

Take time to deliberate, but when the time for action has arrived, stop thinking and go in. -Napoleon Bonaparte

They were sitting there along the Sarowar or the holy pond of the Golden Temple and believe me it was really crowded that day. I liked the color of their Saris a lot and wanted to capture the shot exactly like this. I sat on the stairs on the main entrance and waited for the right moment. I got about 8 shots and this was the neatest with no one in the frame. :)

He was so eager to get the Shabeel (sweetened water) form the roadside stalls that were erected on the occasion of the martyrdom anniversary of the fifth Guru of the Sikhs, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Traditionally, devotees set up these stalls to offer free sweetened water to the thirsty passerbyes during the hot weather on this occasion.

I found this photograph in my archives today and I found that now I like it a lot than I did earlier, when I shot it. I can’t figure out the reason why I have started to like it now though ;-)

Anyway, this photograph was taken 4 years ago, on May 13, 2005 to be precise at the Golden Temple premises. I can clearly remember that there was some renovation work going on at the western section of the premises. As is the devotion and tradition, devotees from the city and adjoining villages come in large numbers to perform ‘Kar Sewa’ or the voluntary service on such occasions. This Sikh kid was amongst those devotees and was heartily taking part in the ‘Kar Sewa’ for quite some time. Then he took a break from his work and gave me this excellent opportunity to have this shot. He was smiling and at the same time looking curiously into my lens, making it the shot for the day… :-)
