Steung Meanchey, Phnom Penh - Chai and his treasure

    Newer Older

View On Black and in Large

Chai is no older than 10. But he has tremendous experiences walking through the glass ‘infected’ dumpsite scavenging for plastic that he could sell to supplement his family’s income.

He has neither sandal nor shirt on but he is tougher than Robocop. The experience of walking through the dump site in Steung Meanchey barefooted and shirtless is like the documentary we often see about Chinese medium walking through glass and fire. It is kind of scary and adventurous.

Chai is a very shy boy and I have hardly heard him talked as he was busy occupying himself with plastic scavenging.

I have more pictures of him that I would share in the near future but I need to run now, sorry. I hope to catch up with you guys after 16th May.

The monochrome version is so powerful Tom.
It captures the essence of this little boy who has to work so hard at his tender age. He still looks so young and innocent.

Fantastic picture and very poignant. Thanks for the reminder about our wasteful consumer society.... I wish I could give someone like Chai a better life....
