yes, illtakeyourphoto!, i think they're both interesting and it's rather impressive that they're original from 1937. the tiles are plastic rather than ceramic. i'm not sure how unusual that is for a house of this era.

They were beginning to try new things then. Although I don't think they'd skimp on "fake" tile in a custome home. I would guess that they could have been a cheap renovation. Look how they put an odd tile slice in the corner. A good craftsman would not do that, but would start with a full tile in the visible corner.

classicsat . . . thank you for your thoughts here. the situation with this particular house is somewhat unusual / tricky. so some reason, Armstrong didn't seem to have "claimed" the finished house as his own design in the sense that (as far as i can tell) never had it photographed or published.

the drawings for the house are labelled "House to be Built in Moberly, Missouri" and do not contain the address or name of the owners. that's fairly unusual.

my impression is that he was hired to do a design by the Green family. apparently, Mrs. Green considered herself to be an interior decorator, so it's unclear to me how much influence Armstrong had on the finishes.

examining the details of the house, it's clear that it has been superficially modified (as to finishes) many times over the seventy years since the house was constructed. you're correct in noticing the tile installation was not done by a professional. however, i'm uncertain at what point in the house's history the tile would have been installed.

dorn0 . . thanks. i don't know why exactly, but i always get a little tickled when modernist-influenced designs of the past are said to be, "traditionally sound".
