Cranberry Vanilla Coffee Cake

Cranberry Vanilla Coffee Cake

I screwed Deb's Cranberry Vanilla Coffee Cake up twice, once by putting twice the vanilla sugar necessary into the filling, once by putting twice the milk into the batter, so by the time I got around to the streusel topping step, I was so annoyed with myself that I didn't bother.

But it came out deliciously anyway.

It's crumbly and moist, and the filling not very sour at all. Om nom nom breakfast.

1570s Ruff - Reinforcement Stitching and Eyelet

1570s Ruff - Reinforcement Stitching and Eyelet

Added a second row of backstitching, and two hand-sewn eyelets through which to attach ties.

Working theory is that this extra stitching is still construction-related, but still meant to be pretty. It's looking like this stitching, even though it's meant to be worn facing the neck, will still be a bit visible from the "outside" because it'll flop over due to the weight of the ruffle. We'll see how it looks after adding French knots.

1570s Ruff - Neck Band Attached

1570s Ruff - Neck Band Attached

I've added a neckband made from a 45x20 cm piece of slightly coarser linen folded in four horizontally. So far, I have whipstitched it to the ruffle, and have completed the first row of reinforcement stitching, an over-2-threads backstitch in 60/3 linen thread; this 50 cm or so of stitching took more more than a full day's work because stitching through all the pleating is so hard. If I continue to follow the stitching used in the Rijksmuseum's BK-NM-13112 ruff, I'll add a second row of backstitching about 4 or five threads out. I need to wait for my new 30/3 linen thread to arrive, but it would be used for the next reinforcement row, a border of triads of French knots. Shall also have to add a couple eyelets, through which to thread ties.

Blogged here.

1570s Ruff - Outside Edge

1570s Ruff - Outside Edge

Even when only pinned, the outside edge is already folding itself naturally into figure-8 loops.

I added no extra stiffening agent enclosed within the outside hem, e.g. the wire or fishing line some have recommended.

1570s Ruff - Stacked Pleats

1570s Ruff - Stacked Pleats

Sets of 5 pleats per stack, each pleat about 1 cm wide. The first pleat of the stack was measured, then the rest of the stack assembled by eye before pinning.
