really good light! wonderful drama by the waves and motion of the water. I wonder what it would be like to stand behind one of those windows and to look out to the sea.

Quite surreal, stormwaves but blue skys and wonderful sunlight colour. The detail of the seagulls in the foreground also adds to the interest. Great picture

The main part of the building should be further to the right and bit lower down. I also see no reason why I should care about this image; the sea is a bit rough, so what? I think this photo would have been better had you been more to your left so that you were more in front of the building (this would probably have involved floating 20ft above the sea, but you should have anticipated this and taken a jet pack with you). You could also have had more of the rocks in the lower right as well.

      Nice but not nice enough.

The builiding isn't particularly interesting, I don't much like the architecture. There is a camper-van looking building parked in the car-park (the camper van must be one of man's ugliest automobile creations), and you can see street-lights behind the cafe. The image seems to clash, it can't decide on a theme.

    13. FlickrJunkie (91 months ago | reply)

      @barbfi, @peter de krom, @sparty lea: Thanks

@Hourman: I did vote 15 times and just sent you a message with the links.

@Robert Scarth: The rough sea makes it special because it's the mediteranean and this is quite unusual. There are no more rocks to the right as it's the sidewalk. ('grin' for the jet pack, allright i'll come prepared next time)

@Insomniac Goose: No camper van there! I could have photo-chopped the street lights but I preferred to preserve the authenticity of the photo.

      Cheers to all

Nice colours and quite dynamic. But somehow the composition needs something. Maybe the building should have been a bit more centred, maybe a different crop. I would have indicated the crop I'm thinking of but lately deleteme has been very cranky about commentators scratching notes on pics. Seems there's too much extraneous detail in the pic.

i love this shot. i don't care what the others say...the colors of the water against the building are just beautiful. nice job.

this looks sick. Still, it's too tight with those two points on the roof coming right to or exiting the frame. Ideally, I'd also with that some seagulls were not lost against the background of the water, but the timing is spot on with the break.

Although it's technically part of the background, the building needs to be brought into focus since its contrasts with the crashing waves is what lends the picture its impact. The colors of the water also seem to be somewhat off.

nothing particularly wrong with this, except DCP is also right about the focus looking a bit soft in the large version. I'm just not finding this an interesting photo overall. colour is good, composition is good, lighting too. It just not somthing I care to look at again for some reason.

Reasonable enough photo, although I'm not keen on the building hitting the top of the frame. Lacking in 'wow' factor to make it safeworthy though

I think the crop is a too tight at the top. The colors are good, focus seems fine to me, but the building needs to be lower in the frame.

crop too tight at top and too many distracting elements (parked cars, all those street lamps)

It is just grasping to my attention the strength of the building. Makes me wonder if the waves always crash the place this hard. Nice work.

Thanking the people that are critisizing but I would like to say that what makes this photo unique to me is that there are never waves this big there (the big lake of the mediteranean), never seaguls and usually when the weather is that bad the sky is not this blue. The cropping was necessary this way to hide lots of useless stuff... maybe i'll put in my stream later photos that show more of this site... All I can say is that's a pretty unique photo of that place...

marlowski: thank you, storms of this size happen once or twice a year... In the summer the terasse covered in waves becomes a restaurant

After reading the comments from the critiqué groups I realize why I quit all the ones I had joined. This is a great picture in my opinion. It's not perfect but I think it evokes the power of the sea well.

A very unique picture indeed of le Café de l'Orient.
Ambience inside and outside around the swimming pool are equally amazing, especially during Ramadan.
A must go for any visitor to Beirut.
