SS Palo Alto

SS Palo Alto

January 2012
12 Months of Panoramosaic (a 365 days series twist)

For this panoramosaic, I shot 35 photos of the ruins of the concrete ship SS Palo Alto docked at the end of the fishing pier in the Seacliff State Beach in Aptos, CA.

I took Ted Orland’s Art Photography class 3 years ago, and he always pushes his students to their limits to create photographic art. That would be the same Ted Orland who squeezed a Bird Book out of me ;). In that class, Ted demonstrated techniques of doing panoramas. He showed the normal stuff, and then showed his take on making panoramic art. At around the same time, I was active with Flickr’s Photography Critique Assignments group where we were doing emulations of famous photographers. One of the choices was David Hockney. I chose Hockney to emulate. I haven’t done any since. Last year, I took Ted’s class again. I mentioned that I wanted to do "landscapes" for my portfolio project. I remember his response was, "You are already doing landscapes. What are you doing different? What challenges are you trying to overcome? How are you going to make art?" These were not the exact words, but they were along those lines. I think I responded with "HDR." So, inspired by Ted Orland and David Hockney, I will attempt to make art with panoramosaics or joiners as Hockney calls them. Let’s call this an experiment as this will be my new series, a monthly this time. Not sure where this is going to go, but either way, I will definitely learn a few things with this photographic journey!

These two male Northern Elephant Seals (Mirounga angustirostris) were fighting for what else but women ;)

I went with my friends Rainey and Theresa for a fundraiser event at the Año Nuevo State Park where we spent all morning long getting really close with these guys!
