Basin Sunset

Basin Sunset

As I was driving towards the backside of the Alvord playa, I realized I wouldn't make it in time for sunset. I glanced to my left and saw this, so I pulled the truck over and decided to shoot the sunset with the "desert sea" of bushes (Greasewood) and a backdrop of the Mickey Buttes, and Mickey Basin. I had 5 miles of road left between me and the ideal location, but the going was slow due to ruts and such. That mist on the horizon is dust from the truck :)

Enjoy!

Wow.... I'll be busy

Wow.... I'll be busy

This is a rough sketch of my shooting adventures for 2012 summer. Add to that that every available day I will be hired as an assistant wedding photographer... Dang! I can't wait.

Of The Sea

Of The Sea

I am not a huge fan of the coast. In fact, I really hate most aspects of it. However, shooting conditions can be pretty epic at times, in certain places, so I shoot it anyways. I'm really liking how this came out.

The day I took this, we had a few epic swells out here. The waves crashed on the rocks, and at times, the water made it to the perch where we were standing and splattered the gear with water (That's about 50 ft above the water level, btw). It was a humbling experience to see just how powerful the ocean can be.

Another photo editing tip: When editing, take time to visualize what you want to do with the photo. Try to visualize the end result before you start messing around. Try to think of yourself as an artist, Photoshop as your brushes, and the RAW photograph as your canvas.

Dreams ~ Mount Jefferson, Oregon

Dreams ~ Mount Jefferson, Oregon

Mount Jefferson is my favorite muse. This is a shot I took back in August 2011 - The first night of an amazing backpacking trip. Spending the night under the face of my favorite mountain, with a backdrop of heavenly stars, was amazing. I find myself longing for these experiences more and more... Maybe I'll just go live in the woods. Lol.

I went out shooting three times this weekend and came away with some keepers, and some definite good experiences!

I processed this shot using Adobe Lightroom 4 beta then CS5. Random tip in Photoshop: When you have a shot with a high amount of noise, sharpening may just accentuate the grain and do a pretty crappy job. Instead, try duplicating the layer, and applying a high pass filter (Filter>other>high pass). Set it to somewhere between 5 and 10 radius. Click apply, then go into the layer palette, and select soft light blending mode. Play around with the opacity and find what you like. Note that this sharpening method will not always give the result you want. Just sometimes :)
