Artist Pantaleon Ruiz in Oaxaca

Artist Pantaleon Ruiz in Oaxaca

Contemporary Oaxacan painter and master weaver Pantaleon Ruiz was born into a family of weavers who have passed down the traditional techniques of hand-weaving tapetes (wool rugs) through generations.

Pantaleon uses only natural ingredients used to make his dyes. Hand ground cochineal, bark, moss, and marigold produce hues of red, brown, green, and yellow that are more vibrant and lasting than even the best synthetic dyes.

The weaving process is done completely by hand. The intricacies of his designs call on influences from his native Zapotec heritage as well as Maya, Hopi, Navajo, and Showa tribe influences.
