Mother and daughter

Mother and daughter

For the Strobist Sundays B&W theme.

For this shoot, I tried clamshell type of lighting. I didn't use shoot through umbrellas because I needed more control over the spill in this space.

The background is a black sheet taped to the wall about 8 feet behind the subjects.

Post-processing: standard retouching, B&W conversion, cropped to 5x7. I skipped my standard sharpening to leave this one a little softer than usual.

Strobist info:
* Key: SB-28 with 1/4 CTO gel above and into a silver umbrella
* Fill: SB-24 into a 28" Westcott soft box just below frame and angled up
Triggered with Radio Popper JrX Studio Triggers.

Before and after - Fencer - Edge

Before and after - Fencer - Edge

A before and after post-processing for the "Fencer - Edge" photo.

The photo on the left is basically straight out of camera (RAW + white balance + basic sharpening).

The photo on the right is the final version.

Fencer - Edge

Fencer - Edge

For the Strobist Sunday's theme "Edge"

I was sick yesterday, so I thought that I'd sneak this one into the Strobist Sundays group before Greg closes the theme. :-) I tried to put the "edge" of the epee (this type of fencing weapon) right at the edge of the shadow. This one turned out very close to how I had imagined it.

Post processing: sharpening, contrast boost, darkened right side a bit more, and copied part of the blade reflection from another exposure.

Strobist Info:
* Key: SB-28 with a 1/4 CTO gel into a Lumiquest SB-III soft box at 9 o'clock, just out of frame, and angled up to get more fall off as we go down and around the fencing jacket.

Strobist Sundays: Short Lighting

Strobist Sundays: Short Lighting

For the Strobist Sundays "Short Lighting" theme.

My model found a wig from one of her old Halloween costumes, and we had fun with some Lindsay Lohan-inspired poses. This one shows short lighting on both of the face and body.

Strobist Info:
* Key: SB-28 with 1/4 CTO and a diffuser dome into a 28" Westcott Apollo soft box, camera left just out of frame.
Triggered with Radio Popper JrX Studio triggers.

Working late

Working late

For the Strobist Stundays theme contrasting "Still/Moving".

I wanted to make an image where the subject was simultaneously still and moving. A person working at a computer was the only idea that I had time to execute. The light from the screen illuminates the hands for the long shutter speed, permitting us to get some motion blur. I used blue gels on my lights because I wanted the light on the subject to be colder. That light might have worked better if the monitor were a CRT instead of an LCD.

The subject is a little blurry here. I think that's because the screen lights his face a bit during a 1+ second exposure. Any motion makes the image blurrier.

Strobist info:
* Key: SB-28 with a grid and a blue gel, camera right and a little behind the subject
* Fill: SB-24 in an SB-III soft box with a blue gel, very close to camera for some on-axis fill
Triggered with Radio Popper JrX Studio triggers.
