Dispair by littledan77.
day 85 – Saddam’s execution has haunted me all day.
My TV is set to wake me in the morning; it is a more gentle way to wake up than the insipid beeping of an alarm clock which, as well as waking you, induces a coronary heart attack.
This morning I woke gently to the news that a man had been executed. At 6am Iraq time Saddam Hussein was hanged. I couldn't quite believe it had happened. I sat up and watched the continuous report on BBC news and all I could think of was that one more person had lost a life.
Saddam, from what little I know, was not a nice man. He was directly and indirectly responsible for literally millions of lost lives. His regime tortured and brutalised a nation and his legacy continues to infect what was once the centre of civilisation.
This presents me with a moral problem. I just can not condone capital punishment. It is a brutal way to carry out justice and no one, and I mean no one, deserves to die in that manner. But in taking that stance I am asking for mercy and compassion for a man that showed none to his victims. I have to admit I briefly thought that his death was a good thing but I quickly retracted that thought. In a modern society we should not execute people. Let’s face it, there is no punishment that befits genocide and mass murder and another death does little to help.
The other disturbing thing about this event is the display of the execution on TV. I remember the uproar when terrorists executed Kenneth Bigley by beheading him. They then distributed the video over the Internet. The world was outraged. Are we any different presenting Saddam’s execution? We need to take a step back and think about what we are looking at. I heard someone say “Oh the hanging is on the Internet, Can I look?” I said “Why?” The reply was slightly chilling “Oh I don’t know. It might be interesting, might be fun.” I was taken aback at the thought that someone I know well could actually see the death of another human as entertaining.

I wonder if we will ever learn.

Man, I can totally feel with you.
I was sadend as well. I was a bit frightend about it. After all, well, you are right, Sadam wasn't a nice man.
But well, you are right again: No one should be allowed to take another mans life and call it justice.
And that's what sadened me even more.... reading that George W. Bush dares to call it just that... justice.

I haven't any comment on George W. Bush.....because if I comment once in any fashion, their'd be no room for any further comments. My patriatism is saddened since the war in Iraq began. I do believe that the brave men and women of our nation fighting for causes (we'll leave it at that too) are admirable and strong and beautiful people. Bring them home already!

As for execution, no living being: human, animal, plant or mineral should die by the hands of another. There is a circle of life that is severly disrupted and one day, our children will pay the price.

Well Dan, you've done it again.... Now mid-January you say????

Thank you for your comments guys and gals.
I think it is important to promote difference of opinion. People need to know that there is an alternative way of thinking and it is not wrong to have differing views of the world. It's how we learn to progress.

As to the GWB thing. I think there are alot of issues there. I don't believe he is the root of all insane decisions. I am not a fan of the present US administration, not just the president. Lets not forget GWB is not a man alone but a leader with a hoard of advisors at hand. They too have parts in this grim opera and we have yet to see the fat lady sing.

I'm still struggling with it too. The man was evil, that's a given, but what did his execution solve? He didn't learn a lesson because he no longer exists. I'm sure it won't deter people in the future. If execution deterred evil people from committing horrible acts I think the millions of executions already carried out would have done so by now. But I wonder, what if he had hurt my family? What if he hurt my child? I would probably want to rip his throat out personally. I can see both sides of this. I don't want people to die but I don't want evil to get away with killing. Where is the happy medium? Is there one?

bartender - the problem is there can not be a happy medium. People feel the universe should be just.
There is a paragraph from a writer, Terry Pratchett, that puts things in perspective

Susan: "All right," said Susan, "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need ... fantasies to make life bearable."
Death NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.
Susan: "Tooth fairies? Hogfathers?"
Death YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.
Susan: "So we can believe the big ones?"
Death YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.
Susan: "They're not the same at all!"
Death TAKE THE UNIVERSE AND GRIND IT DOWN TO THE FINEST POWDER AND SIEVE IT THROUGH WITH THE FINEST SIEVE AND THEN SHOW ME ONE ATOM OF JUSTICE, ONE MOLECULE OF MERCY. AND YET YOU ACT AS IF THERE WERE SOME SORT OF RIGHTNESS IN THE UNIVERSE BY WHICH IT MAY BE JUDGED.
Susan: "Yes. But people have got to believe that or what's the point—"
Death MY POINT EXACTLY.
– Hogfather

I am also reminded of the words of a Kurdish woman speaking on the news this morning. She lost 21 members of her family in the chemical attacks as well as appoximately 500 pupils in the school she taught in.
For her Saddams execution came too quickly. He was not tried and convicted of that crime, only for one crime against humanity that involved 143 people. She is not satisfied. She did not recieve justice. He was not held accountable to crimes against her.
No matter what the outcome people will not be satisfied, the situation will not be resolved by an execution any more than it can be resolved by a payoff or a war.
There is only one thing that can come good of this. That is to learn the lesson and never let history repeat itself in this manner.

To me it's not about whether Saddam, or anyone else who is executed, deserves it. It's about what we decide to be by taking part or supporting such an action. Like you, I would rather decide to be something other than that.
