Leaders Cheaters

In my Cub Scout Pack's yearly Pinewood Derby, after all of the scouts had raced their cars, the leaders and adults could then race theirs. And there were no rules (thus the name Leaders Cheaters).

Our friend Mike's dad, Bob Nessen, built this car for a similar competition. The cockpit is hinged to open, revealing a 9V battery compartment. I had always wanted to enter a car in this race — engineer some wild thing — but could never settle on the perfect technowizardry. Bob did, evidently, and this car won.

Several of the models he had built, this car among them, were on display at the family's house following the memorial service. Among them was a colorful wooden toy plane that Bob had painted. I liked that these artifacts were present, the wooden plane in particular. It meant a lot to his family, and in a way it felt too precious to photograph. But I like all of the things that this car represents, and I think it deserves to be shared.
