Lightning Crashes

Lightning Crashes by ~Prescott.
Lightning coming down over the suburbs of Canberra as viewed from my balcony. This was a magnificant strike, if only the tree were not in the way :)

Thanks Kerryn, I've had a few practices at getting lightning down, this is the first time I've tried when it hasn't been raining directly on me, so I could get the camera out in the open, if it had been just a little more to the right :))

really neat bro, the tree is disturbing of course. but it makes it smooth as well - no direct line into the earth, aye.

This exposure was about 20 seconds. It's really just the luck of the draw, I've been out to try and catch lightning a few times but often the rain around is too heavy to get a clear shot like this.

Very very cool :-)

So the general idea is to just open the shutter for a while during a storm and hopefully there'll be a lightning bolt in frame while it's open?

Yep, that's the idea geoff. It's quite tricky though, often in Canberra the rain in a thunderstorm is so heavy you can't see clearly to the horizon. In this case, the storm skirted the ACT north of the border and I was able to get some great strikes as the sky was clear. I think this night I'd taken 60-70 shots, and got maybe 5 usable ones out of them - thank god for digital cameras :)

that's an incredible shot, i like the tree to be honest, the contrast is cool. you should put some stuff up on www.redbubble.com.au then other people can buy it as big posters
