I've been returning to this pic on and off for months...and I'm still none the wiser...one possibility is that they might be playing out a scene in a novel, or even a play...or maybe this is a still taken on the set of an early motion picture...
Of course, among the superstitious, in cards (and probably life as well), the four of clubs is deemed to be unlucky...here the player on the right appears to be holding only four cards...suggesting that they have either dropped or discarded the four of clubs which we see face up on the seat beside their leg...though they appear to have covered the 4th club on the card, as if to counter the bad luck...the player on the left has what looks like a patch of dense hair growing on their arm...is this a blemish in the photo, or is it the mark of the Devil? Maybe they're about to turn into a warewolf?
Here's a somewhat less sophisticated sub-tropical version www.flickr.com/photos/statelibraryqueensland/8383038402/
