MIght have been taken of someone's aviary birds, used to their owner's presence - they look rather calm to have a camera staring at them. Aviaries being very popular in the Victorian era.

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Eating all the gumdrops that he can see
    Stop, kookaburra, stop
Kookaburra, leave some there for me

    beautiful photo btw

    Wonderful photo!

These are an interesting type of Kookaburra. Either they are not the same as the usual ones I see flying around, or they are immature.

    They're small.

I have never seen that many sitting in a row like that in the wild - so maybe it is an aviary.

I am not sure if they are kookaburras or kingfishers - siimilar but different

adorable little creatures. They look like they are about to topple off of that wire. Love the tension of how cute they are vs. how awkward and unstable their balance looks.

I like "kookaburras" very much, with integral rice, mashed potatoes and garlic... and some wine, for shure.

This is the first time I have found out what a "kookaburra" was...we used to sing the song about them in "Girlscouts" yrs ago (45) when I was young (haha) and this is so neat to see what I was actually singing about then.....just goes to show how much kids ask questions sometimes ..just go with the flow! :)

That is just gorgeous - and great so see such a lovely old photo........Also I have a soft spot for kookaburras having recently been able to hand feed and touch a wild one in Australia.
Also here in NZ where I live we have a flock of 5 wild ones (from wind blown arrivals - there were 2 to start with) but can't get close to them unfortunately........
I'd say young kookaburras and definately not kingfishers which are a bird I'm very familiar with having hand reared dozens of them!

Kookaburras are by nature not particularly shy, and are generally pretty relaxed and happy to sit still and show off for the camera, even wild ones.
