The "Hogeland" is the region in the north of the province of Groningen in the NE of the Netherlands. The name refers to the relatively high altitude of the ground caused by the alluvion of the sea. The soil consists of clay.
It is known for his sharp Hogeland (historical) dichotomy between gentlemen farmers and small farmers / farm workers. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, these social-economic contradictions lead to strikes and often armed statements (Translated from Wikipedia).
