Update: If anyone can tell me how any of these memorials withstood the 2010 & 2011 earthquakes i'd be grateful so i can update their photograph information.
Cheers

Taken on a beautiful nor wester day 26 April 2009 [unless otherwise dated in the taglines]. Linwood Cemetery was one of the more vandalised in Christchurch and until last weekend it had been years since i walked around it. I am so thrilled to see that it has been hugely upgraded and vandalised graves are being repaired and paths and identifying information added. Well done to the Friends of Linwood Cemetery www.linwoodcemetery.org.nz/ for seeing the need to enforce action in relation to maintaining the cemetery.

Additional information appearing in brackets on the photos of some of the deceased was gleaned from:
*'Papers Past digital newspaper imaging' on the National Library NZ website
*Cenotaph database via Auckland Museum website
*Christchurch City Council Cemeteries database via the Christchurch Library website

Hi Sandy
As Secretary of The Friends of Linwood Cemetery I would like to thank you for your interest and kind comments about the current state of Linwood Cemetery.

The Friends of Linwood Cemetery Charitable Trust came about in November 2006 because of the poor state of the cemetery and the lack of action by the City Council. The majority of the efforts you have witnessed have only come about because of the tireless efforts of a small group of passionate volunteers who garden the cemetery, arrange working bees and advocate for the contractual obligations of the City Council being met. We have had to fundraise to get some headstones restored ourselves although it is the responsibility of the family for a grave's upkeep.

We are currently pulling all the information about each grave on our website www.linwoodcemetery.org.nz so that it is in one place for everyone to access. As you can appreciate it is a big job, which will take some time.

We are always looking for new members to help us practically or financially - details can be found on our website. We would gladly welcome you as a member.

Thank you again for your interest. It is really heartwarming for the Trustees to get feedback that our hard work is being noticed.

All very good but the commentry on Linwood Cemetery is missing something. It is not all broken headstones. there was smashed jam jar and booze bottle glass on every grave but it is ALL GONE NOW. Yours truely has cleared by hand all the glass and litter from the cemetery graves and environs since November 2004 (multi tasking on dog-walks) - this has been an exhaustive effort and has made a massive difference, but it seems no one noticed this contribution to making the cemetery (and environs) much nicer and safer and dignified.

I dont like to gripe but really i think my several hundreds of hours of meticulous work and ongoing care-taking in Linwood Cemetary is worth a mention....regards, Kevin O'Connell

p.s. check out the mysterious disappearance of smashed glass from other old Christchurch cemetaries particularly Sydenham, Addington, Bromley (south east half was very sad), Halswell and Barbados St....!

Excellent work Kevin! Sorry but i can't applaud people if i don't know they have done it! Maybe you should join the Friends of Linwood or something similar and build up your own website and let us know what you are all up to then lots of people will get to know all about the lovely people out there doing these things :-). I'm quite willing to put a link from my website www.sarndra.com even. I like that type of thing advertised. It helps bring new memberships also!

Anyway...i for one appreciate all those who take the time to do just what you and Alexandra's team do. Keep up the good work!
