psychiatric help booth at burning man 2005 |
August helped me with the plans and the design, and then he and I spent pretty much the entire weekend of Aug. 20-21 building the psychiatric help booth, my art project for Burning Man 2005. After much drilling and bolting, when we finally got the booth to stand up -- if you can believe this -- even August the long-time-Burning-Man-hater was sad to realize that he wasn't going to be able to sit inside this thing out in the middle of the desert. When we got to Black Rock City, Philly, Lori, Esther (and an angel named cryogenic Dave) helped me put the thing together. We aimed to "staff" the booth for at least 8 hours each day noon-8p.m. from Tuesday-Saturday). Derek, Owen, Flex, Esther, and Molly all helped out, so that I didn't hafta stay inside the booth the whole time. Additionally, several psychologists, including a nice gal named Cynthia stepped in to help us out. It was an amazing experience. I met and spoke with so many people. There was always a line waiting outside the booth, even when we had 2 or 3 "doctors" working at once.
