Page 41 of the Sept 24-30, 2005 issue of The Economist (article about burning man by kurt opprecht)

Headline and sub-head(s) say, "American socialism, Battling with demons, Black Rock City, How our correspondent gave up capitalism in the desert" This is a piece by Kurt Opprecht.
This is a photo of me inside my project -- The Psychiatric Help Booth.
This is an article about hookahs.
Photo caption says, "You get what you pay for." Heheh. Ouch!

In yesterday's Yahoo! Broadband portals' team meeting, my boss Jim walked in and announced -- "I was just reading the latest issue of The Economist, and there's a picture of Jess in there from Burning Man!"

"Please tell me that I have my clothes on in the photo," I joked.

(I already had an inkling about this "media appearance" because I had spoken with writer journalist Kurt Opprecht on the playa while I was inside my art project -- the Psychiatric Help Booth -- and he had mentioned he was writing a piece about the economy of Burning Man for (who else?) The Economist. He talked to me for a while and asked if he could take a photo of the booth.)

You can find Kurt's piece (and this photo) on page 41 of The Economist for September 24th-30th. The article is also available online as premium content, if you have a subscription to The Economist.

Anyway, back to the Yahoo! Broadband portals team meeting where this was all mentioned before I had seen the photo or the piece...

At this point, Allyson looks across the table and says, "Jess, I know The Economist is a well-respected publication, but I'd honestly be more impressed if you had your photo in 'Us' weekly or 'Star' magazine."

(Allyson's comment certainly sheds some light on the state of American Culture in 2005, and as a scholar in this department I promise you I will get to the bottom of it...) What say you?

Heheheh! In internet times, more like 15 seconds! And besides, it's not like it's "Us" or "Star" magazine! ;)

Wow, The Economist.. impressive. of course its slant is on the bartering. But interesting ... the caption: you get what you pay for. WAS THAT A DIS? I mean, you were giving practical advice for life problems. I guess it doesn't beat writing a prescription for prozac, but isn't that getting A LOT for the price? ! :)

Seriously, I think the caption is a diss! Kurt (the writer and photographer) did stop by to ask for some advice and he *seemed* satisfied with our conversation... According to August (who regularly reads "The Economist," in stark contrast to me who regularly reads Wired and Entertainment Weekly) "The Economist" tends to have very punchy photo captions across the board. So, I guess I shouldn't take it the wrong way? Not 100% clear...

Screw Star - The Economist is the hippest publication out there. How do you think I'm so up on robots, the avian flu and other trends?

The Economist has great captions. They're very irreverent. Sure, they're dissing you, but they insult everyone in their captions, from world leaders to cocaine-sniffing models. Having been in US Weekly, I would MUCH rather be in the Economist. Congrats!

The Economist is the new US. I fully expect to see two follow up stories one on dicky, the other on the economic impact of the nutria on New Orleans then the cycle will be complete and Jess's grand vision of mind control will be realized.

hah! i love the economist being the new US. But Jess, they have a point. Power brokers read the economist! not to mention a more international audience. Your message is safer with them, spreading far and wide. Dumb american girls who dream of large weddings and "true love always" read the others. They wouldn't even understand what you're really offering.
