A guy named Garrett Lisi brought the oracle booth to Burning Man in 2000, and I asked him many questions, including "How did you get to be the oracle?"
"You know, last year I asked the guy who was the oracle that very same question," he replied. "And he told me that I should be the oracle."
"You need to take a turn as the oracle now," he told me.
It rained excessively that year -- impeding my oracular ability for several days -- but I returned on Saturday before the burn to spend 3 or 4 hours answering people's questions. "You need to always listen to everyone seriously," was the advice Garrett gave me before I started my shift. Being the oracle was one of my favorite Burning Man experiences of the past 6 years. As far as I know, no one has returned to the playa with the oracle booth since 2000, so I'm going to re-start the tradition this year.
NOTE: Because the Burning Man 2005 theme was Psyche, I decided to title the booth "Psychiatric Help," modeled -- of course -- after
Lucy's psychiatric help booth from the Peanuts comic strip. Lucy charged 5 cents and I was charging 0 cents.
