Premises are now singular. But in other instances this phenomenon becomes generally accepted, e.g. visa which is the plural of visum.

Redact it! (Shown in my dictionary as a verb [trans] rare.) Not very rare now though, is it.

Language changes and sometimes the floods can't be stopped. He's taller than me was once deemed incorrect for he is taller than I am.

Somehow, "This premis is now closed" seems inappropriate.

This whole thread has got me thinking about how we handle "spectacles" "glasses" "trousers" "pants" in sentences where the plural noun for a single object doesnt seem strange. Interesting that these examples all derive from the bilateral symmetry of our bodies

Well, I still use the plural form. My spectacles ARE on my nose, my pants ARE slipping off my ass, etc.. When counting, I refer to '3 pairs of pants', where the object is called a 'pair', which seems to suggest that the singular would denote one leg-covering piece of fabric. Interesting that the singulars in all these cases all have different meanings entirely (spectacle, glass, pant; trouser is an adjectival modifier, as in 'trouser leg'), maybe this is why we use the plural forms in these singular cases? Same applies to 'premis', which refers to arguments rather than architecture.
