Day Eighty Six

    86/365. The essense of cool

I ran into these guys on the corner of 25th & Mission. They are freaking cool. I asked kindly if I could take their picture, and they were more than happy. I even got an invite to come check them out and play (which would completely rule). Guys, if you're reading this, you are awesome. Cheers

strobist info: SB-900 @ 1/32 17mm head bounce from 45" umbrella at standard boring 45° camera right (it was more about the band and bokeh anyway).

    camera info: Nikon D700 | 85mm(ƒ/1.4D) | ƒ/1.4 | ISO 200 | 1/20s — handheld

cool shot...i wish i had confidence to walk around with lighting gear. Do you use a stand or monopod?

    4. Jimmy Hawkins (50 months ago | reply)

      wow, nicely done!

Ditto, , the first thing I thought when I saw this. I also thought about how awesome the bokeh is.

Pictures like these make me wanna spend my savings on a buttload of strobist gear. Damn you for making my photography hobby more expensive!! :P

      btw, awesome pic :)

ThEssenceOFaith: yeah, they were totally awesome. the bokeh was the original plan until these guys showed up.

isayx3: i had brought a tripod, a trigger, and a lightstand, umbrella, and my backpack full of the rest. i didn't really go far though, it was meant to be a snap and run back in the house. you should see the looks you get though when you drop a lightstand and umbrella.

      Jimmy Hawkins: thanks dude.

imagine*life: lucky enough, strobe gear is the cheapest part of photography (to a degree). a cheap flash, some triggers, and an umbrella will cost next to nothing.

      juliusfrumble: hey hey!

      kofyslug: thanks

merlym: haha. thanks, i was glad the AF caught these guys at ƒ/1.4 near dusk.

      Kodaky: :)

IanFlaherty: I took about 5 shots in total. Two came out "not blurry" — also, rear-sync helps freeze the final moment which counts most.

Nancy Rose: you can check out their site at gmolabs.com, looks like they've got a couple artists already :)

      mauronster: !!!

Eric M Martin: i know right! so cool.

      mauspray: thanks man.

      L S G: sweet dude, thanks!

      Nanayof2: hey! thanks.

      plzzz_luv_m1: i <3 bokeh + strobe.

      tmphillips: :)

      sebdal: thanks

      kekika: thanks to you too.

i want to learn how to take great shots like this...

    24. r-dean (50 months ago | reply)

was this shot in raw or jpeg?
      :-)

    25. Dustin Diaz (50 months ago | reply)

frozenjester™: haha. sweet dude, thanks a lot!

gronkmonster: cool man. i toned down the saturation just a tad.

iceman9294: there really ain't much to it :) take a look at a few of my "strobist info" photos.

      Mariela Martinez: yay.

      genevieve.l: cool man. thanks.

r-dean: my usual jpeg. shooting RAW only washes over once in a blue moon for me. JPEG will get 99.9% of my shots just fine.

      blackcrowes: !!

      OneEyedJack: cool dude. thanks.

I have a D700, and NEVER use flash... probably because I suck at it.

This picture makes me think i'm really missing an important part of my photography... Do you have any resources on how to get good with flash? I've searched and nothing works well for me.
