My wife and I hiked here on Saturday, August 23, 2003. We planned on camping near the falls, but those plans changed a bit. We hiked to the falls, which at that point in the summer was little more than a trickle. It did, however, leave a perfectly clear, cold pool near the footbridge. My wife stripped and jumped into the water.
Her move surprised the hell out of me, and I thought she was out of her mind. Knowing I'd never hear the end of it if I didn't, I shed my clothes and jumped in after her.
Shockingly cold, but amazingly exhilarating. I loved what she did, and how it made me feel.
Then, it hit me: there would never be a better time. We got out of the water and stood on a boulder (that was, oddly enough, vaguely heart-shaped), both of us completely naked. I got down on a knee, and told her that everything I was was right in front of her, and would she be my wife. I think she was just a bit surprised. :-) She said, "Yes", and we embraced on the rock.
We didn't stay at Hetch Hetchy that night. We were so damn excited that we decided to leave so we could go home and celebrate and call people and
yay we're getting MARRIED!!! We packed up the gear and hauled ass for the seven miles to the parking lot because the gates closed at 9:00 and we weren't sure if we'd be able to get the car through. At the gate, we returned the bear canister, and told the ranger girl that we decided we wouldn't be camping that night because something came up.
We made it back to Stockton around midnight, drove to a 24-hour supermarket, and bought a cheap bottle of champagne. The kid who checked us out at the register was the first person in the whole world to find out that we were engaged.
