That's, actually, a really effective idea. A PS3 is probably more powerful than any high end desktop or server computer and at a much lower cost.

So you are using a consumer level product as your production servers rather than made for use servers in space efficient rack mounts?!?! Why?

This has got to be the most ignorant statement I have heard in a long time.

What on earth is the point of posting a pic like this when its so low resolution you can't even make out whats in the racks!

I agree with pjcard.... this pic needs to be higher res.

and yeah, solidsnake: you don't know what you're talking about. Although the Cell can push some serious math, this cluster couldn't outperform a similarly priced traditional cluster.

do you think they're using the built-in ethernet on those units? I'm surprised they're not using something with a little more kick (Fibre or infiniband or something).

You people must not know about TerraSoft

You can buy PS3 Clusters.

The PS3 does make a fairly good low cost server. Not as ideal as using an actual server built for the task, but they can do their job. And as far as a media stunt goes... that just looks cool. :P

Oh and similarly priced. From what we can see there is about 75 PS3s. Priced at around $600 each, you're looking at $45,000 for what is pictured (give or take). A similarly priced machine may go for around $1500 - $2000 + ($3k .. $4k ?) each. Even at $1500, you're looking at $112,000 for that many servers.

It seems most likely to me that the reason why they are using PS3s is because they can use the same code for the servers as they use in the game. If they had used traditional server clusters, quite some additional development effort would have to be put in re-writing the server code. This way it’s easier to develop, and it’s also guaranteed that the game’s built-in server functionality (which I’m very excited about, more games should have this, no more official server shutdowns making your game useless!) is identical to the servers hosted by SCEE.

also, these are game servers, which are going to have different requirements than your webserver/mailserver/etc, and those extra FLOPs of the PS3 will come in quite handy, or at least id imagine so,

How many units are there?

@snake.diver
I seriously doubt they got them at the retail price... buying bulk has it's advantages, even better if your about to build a cluster!!
