Durban is a booming port city that is also home to the Zulu people. Just outside the city in the township of Umlazi, the Zulu people gather in the hills in large groups to fill the air with their beautiful voices. Choral music is a sacred part of the Zulu tradition, and we witnessed first hand the dedication and pride the singers embody. The songs often deal with the social and political environment of the community, including the relevant issues of HIV and poverty. Yet despite the gravity of these topics, the music conveys messages of hope and inspiration, and the need to live a happy, healthy life.
