My life is made up of bizarre coincidence. I have met both Ms. Tereshkova and Philip Bond. Although not at the same time.

She seemed so sad, too. I once wrote a song about her, which had a theremin in it: guildofscientifictroubadours.com/choons/valentina%20teres...
For one thing, she didn't have any controls in her capsule, like Laika. For another, once she became a celebrity, the Party kind of took over her life. You spend three days in space at age 26 and Khrushchev organizes your wedding.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentina_Tereshkova
They called her "Gagarin in a skirt": www.astronautix.com/astros/terhkova.htm
I think she was happier after the 1980s. Brezhnev gave her permission for a divorce, and she was able to do actual meaningful stuff with space research.
I love that in this portrait, her eyes are averted. She was always a patriot, but her life (at least the part around her mission into space & after) seemed wistful.

Musician/composer Kurt Swinghammer put out a whole CD dedicated to her: it's called "Vostok 6." Go find it. You won't regret it.
