Introducing the Oaxaca Market Project as seen on the Ashoka Challenge.
MEXICO - Oaxaca has some of the best markets and distinctive folk art stores in the country.
Tradional markets include 20 de Noviembre y Benito Juárez, Artesanias, Abastos and Sanchez Pascuas markets. Newer markets include the 8 Regiones, Pochote and La Estacion.
In the past few years organic and natural products stores have opened, including Xiguela and Bambu. Out of town stores such as Ayuuk sell a selection of natural products. And traditional craft stores such as El Arte Oaxaqueño have been selling traditional crafts and supporting cultural heritage for decades.
This collection also highlights the 'high season' markets, temporarily set up during holidays when the tourist traffic is greater. Also we have added galleries documenting regional Folk Art and the Rural Tourism Fairs (2001-2009).
ABOUT THESE PHOTOS
The photos in these galleries were taken by Ron Mader and accompany articles on Planeta.com. Print copies have been shared directly with the venders.
In some cases we have collaborated with venders so that they have their own email and flickr galleries. The Taller Internet has been offered on demand since 2001.
BE GENEROUS
Suggestion. If you are visiting Oaxaca, print out a few favorites, find the venders and give them the copy. It will make their day, particularly if you buy something.
