Adjustment Layers are the only serious thing this program is missing. That, and the ability to undo cropping an image without parts of the image being inexplicably erased. Oh yeah, and the ability to hold shift and consistently drag a straight line with every tool. Oh, and the ability to change the size of a brush and use the new brush without having to press "okay" every time. And the ability to edit text colors for individual words of a text layer without the entire layer inexplicably changing to match the new colors. And the ability to use layer styles, so I don't have to create a bunch of duplicate layers when all I want is a simple drop shadow. And maybe the ability to work with 16 bit images, like most other image editing programs have been able to do for a decade.

You know what, never mind, I'll just stick with Photoshop. I keep really wanting to like this program, but it is so broken, and so "not ready for prime time" that I can't in good conscience recommend it to anyone. Graphic designers can't use this effectively without layer styles. Photographers can't use it effectively without non-destructive adjustment layers. With that in mind, who can I possibly recommend this to?

I love this application. It is a feature packed, powerful image editor with a beautifully designed, smart and intuitive interface. I find the inventiveness of the user interface phenomenal. I have huge respect for the developers of this app and am looking forward to seeing more great things come from them.

I find the previous comment funny considering the user is criticizing the application condescendingly by comparing it to Adobe Photoshop, when the comparison of Pixelmator (at its 1.0 version) to Photoshop must be such a thrill and huge accomplishment for these two developers. Especially considering the size of the team that must work on Photoshop, the vast number of years it's been in development, and the hefty price tag it carries.

What an amazing achievement it is for two single developers to make such a beautiful, creative, intelligent and leading edge application, and to be able to offer it for $59 and have it compared to the giants.

Many props for your hard work and congratulations on how well its paid off. You guys are awesome.

And props on your website, the visual design totally rocks.

Kevin, props to you too. Your photos are sick.
Your critique of this app, though, seems too harsh, and unthoughtful.

I personally have never missed any of those features, and am much more interested in this application going in the direction of vector based drawing, and becoming the app for OSX visual design.

@Kevin - you use Photoshop to make drop shadows? Man, that's like killing a mosquito with a machine gun... gosh and I remember the days when there were no adjustment layers, heck I remember when there was no colour! (ah Superpaint on a Mac Plus) however did we use to survive?
