Did you check to see if the plastics used for these spindles are food-safe? Knowing what a fresh spindle of CD/DVD smells like I don't think i'd put my lunch in there no matter how much washing I did. A few wourds of caution.

good idea but i would stay away from CD-R cases if it is indeed what you used. aren't cyanides used in the manufacture of CD-Rs, which may leak out into the case itself? that will get you going in the morning...er mabye not ;)

themicah says:

Very clever, but I wonder if there are toxicity issues.

Food containers in the US generally use special food-grade plastics that are much safer than the plastics used in other cheap packaging. While putting your bagel in a washed CD spindle once or twice would be unlikely to cause any significant harm, carrying your lunch every day this way could expose you to some pretty nasty chemicals over time, depending on what kind of plastic the spidle is made from.

saltysnax  Pro User  says:

Sorry to be a cranky downer here (along with themicah and others I might have missed), but it's just not a good idea. Just think about opening up that container before you put the bagel in it -- imagine that smell. Doesn't that nasty chemical smell give you a clue that maybe this plastic and food don't belong together? The plastic used for those things is not food-grade. It shouldn't be used for food because it'll basically poison you. Not enough to make you sick, I hope, but you never know...

f-auto  Pro User  says:

I agree with some previous posters, you have to be careful with eating inside plastic containers and with eating plastic in general. Plastic is derivated from many nasty things you don't want to put in your mouth, even if in the end plastic objects are often fascinating, beautiful, well-designed, cheap, etc. I believe eating from non-food-safe plastic containers gives little doses of toxins to your body at a time, which in the end accumulate and can end up to poisoning, intoxication, or colon cancers. The idea would be fun to use in a comic strip, in a film, in a cartoon or whatever but I do not recommend eating plastic, whether it rubs off on a bagel or making eggs cook in a Ziploc bag - plastic is nice looking but nil by mouth. "A bon entendeur".

Now they will need to print on these "Not intended for use as a food safe container." Bleh, just the smell that comes out of these would be enough to keep me from putting food in them.

It WOULD be a cool idea for the bagel sandwitch chains to use though as all the injection molds are (obviously) available. All they need to do is find someone to use food safe materials to make them with.

This is a great idea. I like omfg btd's comment about using the top part as a cereal bowl. I never need to buy bowls again ;)

Just out of interest, is it the plastic from the case, the CD's, or a combination that gives the nasty smell?

What other uses do people have for these tubs?
