2009.012 . Loma Sunset
Started teaching two afternoon chemistry classes at Point Loma today. This is my 7th semester there, and it feels good. My office view looks like this. Well, actually, my view is through a screen, so I stepped outside to get this photo. Still, this is the basic idea. The great thing about afternoon classes is that it's not too hard to stick around and see this every day.
The classes went well, despite a mad rush to finish my syllabus this morning. Typically, I'm not so far behind on the first day, but I spent the last few days preparing for Susan's birthday. It was definitely worth the time.
My students seem well-rested and interested, or at least as interested as non-science majors can be. They tend to be quite wary and sometimes scared of science courses, usually, but these two groups seemed to be quite receptive. I see it is my job to keep them interested and boost their "science confidence" during the next four months. Tomorrow and Wednesday I get to meet my lab students, which will be full of chemistry and biology pre-med majors. Quite different, but still sure to be fun.
