Wonderful macro. You can see every crystal. The bare hint of a flake in the upper right is also very interesting. Good work - a fave.

Thank you, everyone.
In answer to your questions:
I used my little Nikon 4200 for these. It's only a 4 meg, but when conditions are PERFECT, you can take some cropped macros. It will focus nicely about 2 inches away from the subject. It warns you if you are too close, so I get as close as I can, then, keep pressing the button halfway as I back the camera away from the subject. When it stops flashing the red warning sign, I shoot. You have to hold the camera as still as possible, so I take several shots from several angles when I discover an unusually nice flake. If the sun is shining on the surface of the flake at the right angle, the camera recognises the focal point.
These flakes on Sunday morning were exceptionally large - some up to 4 or 5 millimeters in diameter. Also the sun came out while I was shooting, which helps them to be noticed, although it begins to melt the little darlings, so you know you need to shoot fast. It also helps to find flakes in the "twilight" areas of the snow - not in full sun nor quite full shadow - so the background is in that blue shadow that snow has, while the flake you want is reflecting the light. Those are the shots with the blue color.

This is better than my snowflake, by far! A question. Was this snowflake in a cold, dry snow or a wet and heavy snowfall? Thanks!

CaptPiper  Pro User  says:

Thank you.
Zetabase, this was very cold, dry and flaky.
Here is a picture of what the snow was like: www.flickr.com/photos/piper/70682661/
The flakes were the largest I had ever seen.

The Notebook Ghurl says:

I've heard that you can capture snowflakes in superglue.
I've been wondering if this istrue.

I've never seen a real snowflake like this, and I've only played in snow twice...
So it is true then...that each and every one of them are different?
How'd you get down to this microscopic level???

It's simply, amazing.
Posted 2 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

CaptPiper  Pro User  says:

No, you couldn't capture snowflakes in superglue. They would melt immediately.
I haven't seen two that are alike, but really, that's just an old idea based on the enormous variety of ways six crystalline arms can form.
This is not microscopic. It is easily seen witht the human eye. It is unusual for a flake to get this big - conditions have to be perfect, but this one is about 4 or 5 mm in width.
