Definitely 'One of the greatest English writers.' Once he got talking to Tennyson, perhaps they only met the once but I can't remember and they were talking about misprints when Tennyson (in his usual witty style) complained that the printers had misprinted his word Airy as Hairy! Tennyson invited him to come to his house but Hardy never did go.

He himself wrote about the English priest who threw a copy of Jude into the fire regretting that he could not do the same for Hardy himself and the American who convinced from all reviews that Jude was a piece of pornography felt cheated of his money on reading it.

Yes, he was rather neglected and felt it too. It was his wife Emma who persuaded to change his mind when he had all but given up the writing profession and destroyed one of his own MSS, he was touched that she believed in him and always remembered her for that and much else.
