Sigma DP1 (my second)

Sigma DP1 (my second)

I sold my first DP1 about a year ago - and realized I couldn't do with out it. So here is #2.

I was worried about the design flaw - whereby the ribbon cable in the lens shears from the lens retracting and extending every time you power up the camera. So I picked up the "lens fix" wire (off ebay) which when installed, causes the lens to stay in the out position perminantly.

This of course makes the camera pretty vulnerable to bumps on the extended lens - so I picked up the sigma ha-11 hood adaptor and the hood. It protects the forever-extended lens, and looks pretty sweet (gives it the fancy rangefinder aesthetic.)

And then for good measure, a B+W haze filter which screws into the ha-11 (so its a 46mm filter)

I find this setup works very well. Powering on takes less time, because the lens is already out. And I like the handling with the hood adaptor and hood. The obvious downside is that its not really pocketable anymore… but whatever. I generally didn't carry it in my pocket anyhow.

As for the camera itself… There is something about the DP1 and its foveon sensor that makes for some very very unique digital images.

Colours, sharpness and dynamic range are remarkable. And for about $300 used… its cheaper than a crappy lens.

And yet the lens on this camera is FANTASTIC. Oh and did I mention the sensor is APS-C sized?!?

Anyhow if you want a very sluggish, unpolished, quirky camera that takes amazing photos - check it out. Worth all the trouble, and then some.

PS: the screen is HORRIBLE. you'll barf when you look at the previews, then when you download them to you're computer, you'll cry at the pure beauty.
