Great knife. I saw Mike's video and
immediately wanted one as well. I can't
understand why this knife isn't more well
known or discussed in the Bushcrafting world.
It seems like it's destined for cult status,
but I don't know when. I plan to order one as
soon as I'm able. It's expensive, but I
haven't yet found another knife I like as
well as this one.
I used to think the Woodlore was "the
one" until I saw the price tag and
waitlist, and even the clones aren't much
better. The Skookum looks nice, but I've seen
so many mixed reviews on it, and I can't just
walk nextdoor and borrow one, so I passed on
it.
I do own a Mora #2, and I always thought it
would be the perfect knife if it had a full
tang, and finally somebody made one. The
thumb cutouts are just inspired.
A few questions, if I may. How is the
weight? It looks like a heavy knife. Do you
know if the tang is skeletonized? How well
does the sheath fit the knife? Is it secure?
I think I would prefer the knife to fit even
deeper into the sheath than it appears to in
your photos, and use the lanyard to pull it
out. I lost a Mora Clipper due to poor sheath
retention. Thankfully it was only a $10
knife. Now I throw away those awful plastic
things the Swedes put their knives in.

Yeah, I agree with you that the knife is
nowhere near as popular as it should be. I
think it's probably due partly to its
newness, and I imagine partly because it's
written off as just another Woodlore clone
before people take a close look at it and see
that it's something more.
That's interesting that you've heard mixed
reviews on the Skookum. I haven't heard
anything bad about it, except for its looks.
The BCNW-O1 is a heavy knife. My (not
incredibly accurate) kitchen scale puts it at
just over 6 oz. For comparison, the same
scale says that the Mora in this photo is
2oz. That's the compromise for the thick, full tang.
I don't think that the tang is skeletonized.
It doesn't feel as light or as balanced as I
would expect it to feel if it were. You can
email Mike (mike at bushcraftnorthwest.com)
and ask him.
The knife will go a little under 1/2"
further into the sheath than I have it my
photos, but you're not going to be able to
get it in deep enough to need a lanyard to
pull it out. Still, it is very secure. I've
never had it fall out. You're right that
those plastic sheaths that Mora knifes come
with are cheap pieces of shit. I keep my Mora
in a JRE sheath that's the same scandi style as the
one that JRE makes for the BCNW-O1. It also
has never fallen out. I think that if you
look around on the various Bushcraft
community sites, you'll have a hard time
finding any negative thing said about either
scandi style sheaths or JRE scandi sheaths in
particular.

The criticism I've heard most is due to the
handle shape. Those with big hands say the
buttplate has a tendency to dig into your
palm. I haven't handled one, so I can't say
it would necessarily be the same for me, but
I have pretty big hands. Several people have
also said their knife has easily pierced the
sheath.
It's hard to judge a knife without being
able to handle and use it before you buy it,
but I know how well I like the feel of the
round handled Moras, so it would lead me to
believe the BCNW is similar.

I don't know if my hand qualifies as big, but the BCNW handle is
very comfortable for me. Like you say, it's
round like the Moras, but a good deal bigger,
which prevents the cramping that I often get
with Mora knives.
