Series: A Walk through Forest Park
(05-29-2006)
Forest Park, the land of the Lenape and
the Delaware Native Americans, is a huge
park encompassing some 538 acres of
land. This beautiful New York City
Park in borough of Queens has giant
trees and long established trails that
are a treat for any park lover.
In 1895 Brooklyn was fast becoming more
populated. And with open spaces
immensely becoming more meager, the
Brooklyn Parks Department was searching
for land to create recreation facilities
away from the populated areas in
Brooklyn. A heavily wooded area in
Queens County was chosen because of its
wonderful views and plentiful wildlife.
The new park was named Brooklyn Forest
Park. But by the time the last parcel
of land was purchased in 1898, Brooklyn
and Queens had become part of New York
City. So the name of the park was
changed to Forest Park.
Many facilities were added to the park
in the years that followed. Today
Forest Park has miles of trails and many
vast green spaces. Facilities from golf
to tennis are offered in the park.
Forest Park has something for everyone.
For me, I was stunned by the sheer
vastness of the park. We always try to
find our little separateness when we
visit the park. So I tried to capture
through photography the individuality of
the park. The park is wonderfully
green, but I rendered the images in
Black and White. You will have to use
you own imagination.
